시베리아의 토착 가면들은 고대로부터 그곳의 툰드라와 숲, 타이가와 고산지대 그리고 나무 스텝지역의 생태에 맞게 사냥과 어획, 그리고 동물 사육에 종사하며 살았던 원주민들의 오래된 문화유산이다. 시베리아 가면은 우리의 탈과 유사하게 입체적인 사실성을 묘사하기보다 선과 면을 단순하고 자유롭게 구사하여 얼굴에 대한 수많은 변주를 보여준다. 따라서 이들 가면의 형상들은 비예측적이며 나아가 누구의 얼굴도 아닌 모호하고 상징적인 인상을 준다. 이와 같은 시베리아 가면의 조형적 특성은 샤머니즘의 영혼 표현과 관계가 있다.

샤먼의 얼굴 또는 머리에 쓰거나 코스튬에 매달린 가면은 죽은 영혼들의 가시적인 형상물로써 샤머니즘 카믈라니에 속에서 샤먼의 수호령 또는 도우미령의 역할을 한다. 아브갈다이와 보르토 가면을 비롯한 시베리아 가면들은 특정 샤먼이나 조상의 구체적인 얼굴을 없앰으로써 익명성을 띠게 하고, 이로써 가면은 보는 이에게 쉽게 간파당할 수 없고 비밀스러운 신령의 권위를 획득하게 되었다. 그로 인해 가면은 누군가의 죽은 조상이 아닌 씨족 전체에 해당하는 조상령이나 보편적인 도우미령으로 인식될 수 있었다. 따라서 어느 곳에 있든지 가면은 신적 권위를 발산하므로 사람들은 가면을 통해 자신의 삶을 간파당할 수 있다는 의식을 내화하게 되었다. 이와 같이 시베리아 가면에는 그 형태 속에 샤머니즘 신령들의 속성을 지각하는 원리가 숨어 있다.

The indigenous masks of Siberia are the ancient cultural heritage of the indigenous peoples who have been engaged in hunting, fishing and animal raising since ancient times in accordance with the ecology of the tundra, forest, taiga, alpine and wooden steppes. Similar to Korean masks, the Siberian mask shows numerous variations on the face by simply and freely using lines and surfaces rather than depicting three-dimensional realism. Therefore, the shapes of these masks are unpredictable, and furthermore, give an ambiguous and symbolic impression that does not resemble any man. The formative characteristics of the Siberian masks are related to the way of expressing soul in shamanism.

The mask worn on the face, head, or costume of a shaman is a visible figure of the dead souls, which serves as the shaman's guardian spirit or helper spirit in the shamanistic Kamlanie. Siberian masks, including Abgaldai and Borto masks, take on anonymity by removing specific face of certain shaman or ancestor, thereby making the masks invisible to viewers and acquiring the authority of a secret spirit. As a result, the mask could be recognized as an ancestral spirit or universal helper spirit for the entire clan, rather than someone's ancestor. Therefore, wherever they are, the mask carries divine authority, making people feel as if they're being watched by it. As such, the principle of perceiving the attributes of shamanistic spirits is hidden in the shape of the Siberian mask.
