和銅6年(713)에 國·郡·郷의 行政地名을 二字·嘉名으로 改訂하도록 한 好字二字令의 실시 이후 통일된 地名表記가 가능하게 되었지만, 地名의 漢字 音訓에 있어서 萬葉集 등의 音訓과는 다른 異形的인 읽기를 만들어 낸 것으로 볼 수 있다. 本稿에서는 元和本和名類聚抄 郡·鄕名을 대상으로 먼저 地名表記에 사용된 漢字의 音訓이 萬葉集의 音訓과 다른 異形을 찾아내어, 같은 地名에 대하여 和名類聚抄 異本, 木簡, 日本書紀, 古事記, 延喜式, 姓氏録, 霊異記 등의 諸文獻에서 보이는 異表記와 比較하여 地名이 어떻게 二字化되어 갔는지를 考察해 보았다. 1音節地名의 二字化에는 원래 읽기에서 漢字를 追加한 경우가 많으며, 多音節地名의 二字化에서는 원래 地名에 사용된 漢字를 省略하여 表記한 경우가 많다. 따라서 好字二字令에 의한 무리한 地名 二字化의 影響으로, 地名의 漢字 音訓에 있어서 萬葉集 등에서는 보이지 않는 異形的인 읽기가 생겨난 것으로 볼 수 있다.
