This paper is a critical review on Aurel Kolnai’s work, On Disgust. There is no doubt that disgust (or hatred) is a serious social problem today. But it is not easy to solve the problem. Above all, the social reality surrounding it is complicated. The vagueness and ambiguity of the concept adds to the difficulty. Kolnai’s analysis on disgust is thoroughly phenomenological(in the sense of Phenomenology of Husserl and Scheier). His phenomenological analysis faithfully describes the nature of the concept of the disgust, as well as the similar concepts, such as fear (anxiety), hatred, and contempt. He analyses their similarities and differences. And Kolnai argues that the disgust has an ethical function. We could compare his analysis to recent theories, such as M. Nussbaum. And it provides us an opportunity to think how it is possible to overcome disgust.
