1953년 12월 1일, 영주 숙수사지에서는 27구의 소금동불상이 출토되었다. 이 불상들은 삼국시대부터 고려시대까지 해당되는 불상으로 ‘영주’라는 옛 신라의 영토라는 점과 ‘숙수사지’라는 정확한 사찰 터라는 출토 경위가 명확한 점에서 주목된다. 이 소금동불상은 숙수사지의 창건에서부터 폐사까지의 내력을 추정하는 근거가 되며, 시대마다 다양한 도상을 보여주는 점에서 이례적이다.

소금동불상이 출토된 숙수사지는 조선시대에 소수서원이 건립되면서 오늘날까지 이어지고 있어 발굴이 불가능하다. 따라서 숙수사와 관련된 문헌기록과 현존하는 석조물을 통해 내력과 흔적을 추정할 수 있다. 문헌기록을 통해 숙수사는 고려시대에 국가에서 관리하는 사찰로서의 지위를 유지하면서 건재했던 것으로 보인다. 조선시대의 기록에서는 폐사에 대해 언급하고 있는데, 1543년(중종 38) 소수서원 건립 전에 이미 폐사지로 기록되어 있어 조선 중기부터는 확실히 폐사 되었음을 알 수 있다. 현존하는 석조물을 통해서는 7세기부터 사찰이 운영되었음을 알 수 있고, 다수의 석조물이 8세기 후반에서 9세기대에 조성되었던 것으로 보아 해당되는 시기에 중창 또는 버금가는 규모의 불사가 있었던 것으로 보인다.

27구의 소금동불상은 금동삼존불상, 금동여래입상, 금동여래좌상, 금동탄생불입상, 금동보살입상, 금동보살좌상, 금동반가상, 금동신장상, 금동공양자상이다. 27구에 대해 시대 구분을 하면 삼국시대 13구, 통일신라시대 8구, 고려시대 6구이다. 삼국시대의 상을 통해 고구려의 영향을 받았음을 알 수 있고, 신라의 독창적인 양식 또한 나타난다. 특히 금동보살입상은 6세기의 것으로 현존하는 신라의 불상 중 가장 이른 예이다. 금동탄생불입상 또한 출토지를 알 수 있는 상으로 주목된다. 통일신라시대의 불상은 여래입상이 많으며, 경주에서 제작된 중앙 양식과 거의 비슷한 조형성을 보여준다. 고려시대의 불상은 판불의 형식을 한 금동삼 존불상과 금동신장상 그리고 금동공양자상으로 구성되어 있다. 이 상들은 크기와 주조방식으로 보아 같은 공간 안에 안치되었을 가능성이 크지만, 용도 및 봉안 방식에 대해서는 정확하게 알 수 없다.

소금동불상이 출토된 숙수사지가 위치한 영주는 신라와 고구려의 접경 지역이자 선진문물이 들어오는 주요한 교통로이다. 영주에서는 일찍이 불교가 들어와 활발한 불사를 진행하였고, 숙수사 또한 이러한 배경 속에서 건립되어 불상을 조성하였던 것으로 판단된다.

숙수사지 출토 소금동불상에 대한 선행연구는 출토 이후 불상의 현황 파악과 학계에 소개되는 정도에만 그쳤다. 본 연구는 그동안 단편적으로 연구되었던 영주 숙수사지 출토 소금동불상을 조명해 보았다. 이 연구가 추후 숙수사지에 대한 연구의 확장에 도움이 될 수 있기를 기대한다.

On December 1, 1953, a total of twenty-seven Small Gilt-bronze Buddha Statues were excavated from the Yeongju Suksusa Temple Site. These statues which are from Three states to Goryeo have drawn lots of attention due to the fact that they were discovered in Yeongju, the territory of Silla, and their excavacated site, ‘Suksusa Temple Site’ is clear.

As ‘Sosuseowon’ was founded during the Joseon era and has been preserved until today, at the very site where the Gilt-bronze Buddha Statues were discovered, ‘Suksusa Temple Site’is impossible to excavate further. Thus, we can presumably trace its history only through the documents related to the ‘Suksusa Temple’ and existant stone artifacts.

The twenty-seven Small Gilt-bronze Buddha Statues are comprised of Triad Buddha, Buddha, Infant Buddha, Bodhisattva, Seated Statue in Half Lotus Posture, Buddhist Guardians and Donors. To list them in chronological order, 13 are from the period of the Three States, 8 from the Unified Silla, and 6 from Goryeo. Statues from the period of the Three States shows they have been influenced by the Northern Wei style of Goguryeo, as well as unique features of Silla. In particular, the standing gold gilt bronze Buddha which belonged to the 6th century, is the earliest form of existing Silla statues. The standing Gilt-bronze Buddha Statues of the Unified Silla shows the forms and trends of Gyeongju region. In Goryeo, the Triad Buddha statue and Buddhist Guardians can be seen, both engraved on relief plates.

Yeongju, where the Suksusa Temple Site is located, and the Small Gilt-bronze Buddha Statues were excavated, has been not only a border between Silla and Goguryeo but also has been an important route for introducing the advanced culture. Given that, it is assumed that the Suksusa Temple was also founded in this context and the active constructions of the Buddha Statues were also fostered.

This study concentrates on shedding lights to seeking for the meaning and the value of the Small Gilt-bronze Buddha Statues of the Yeongju Suksusa, on which only fragmented studies have been performed so far, related with the Small Gilt-bronze Buddha Statues during the Silla periods. It is hoped that this study will contribute to the expansion of the indepth studies on the Suksusa Temple Site and the 27 pieces of Small Gilt-bronze Buddha Statues.
