Purpose: To investigate the characteristics of impacted teeth in Korean patients and the factors affecting the treatment success and period of upper impacted canines.

Materials and Methods: Among the patients who visited Department of Orthodontics at Gil Hospital from 2010 to 2019, we evaluated 438 subjects who had sufficient medical records for evaluation of impacted tooth characteristics.

Results: A total of 570 cases ware evaluated for this study (316 cases in male, 254 cases in female patients) and the total number of patients was 438, of which 240 were males and 198 were females. Most of them were between the ages of 11 and 15, and the number of cases in the age group reached 298. There were 406 cases in the maxilla and 164 cases in the mandible respectively. The impacted teeth were often located in the center of arch rather than buccal or lingual. Repositioned flap (RF) method was the most common surgical exposure technique. Orthodontic treatment was performed in 378 cases, and the success rate was 94.1% in the maxilla, and 93.6% in the mandible. In order to find out the factors affecting the treatment success and treatment duration of maxillary impacted canines, gender, age, axis angulation and tooth position were evaluated. Age was the most significant factor in determining the treatment success, while ankylosis was the most common cause of the treatment failure. And age and axis angulation were factors influencing the treatment period.

Conclusion: It is necessary to make various and continuous efforts to increase the treatment success rate and shorten the treatment period of impacted teeth.
