한국 사회는 다양한 민족적/문화적 배경을 가진 구성원들의 비율이 지속적으로 늘어나며 실질적인 이질사회로 접어들었다. 이런 변화와 함께 나와 다른 타자를 수용하고자 하는 관용과 이에 영향을 미치는 다양한 개인적, 사회적 요인들을 밝히고자 하는 시도들이 활발하다. 본 연구에서는 나와 다른 집단, 사회적으로 배척받는 집단을 나의 일상으로 수용하고자 하는 의지에 있어 지역 공동체라는 물리적 범위를 기반으로 하는 시민적 참여의 역할, 그리고 타자와의 커뮤니케이션에 있어서 개방적인 태도를 가지는 관용적 커뮤니케이션의 효과를 실증적으로 분석했다. 분석을 위한 데이터는 서울 시민 대상의 온라인 서베이(N=545)를 통해 수집했다. 분석 결과, 한국 사회에서 다양한 종류의 지역 활동 참여는 나와 이질적인 사람들에 대한 일상적 수용에 부정적인 영향력을 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 반면, 관용적 커뮤니케이션 태도는 긍정적인 효과를 나타냈다. 상호작용 효과 검증 결과, 개인의 관용적 커뮤니케이션 성향이 높아 타자와의 대화에 적극적이고 열린 사람들의 경우 지역 활동에 다양하게 참여하는 것이 관용 수준에 부정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 확인했다. 결과를 바탕으로, 지역 커뮤니티 내 다양한 구성원들 간의 공생/공존을 위한 관계망 구축에 기여할 수 있는 커뮤니케이션 방식에 대해 논의했다.
