본 연구의 목적은 지방 출신 청년층의 이동·정주 결정 과정과 그 양상을 분석하고, 목포와 춘천 청년들에게 공통적으로 드러난 수도권 지향 인식을 포착하는 것이다. 두 도시 청년들 50명을 심층 인터뷰한 결과, 이들은 인구· 지리·교육적 특성에서 차이를 지녔으나 많은 경우 수도권으로 이동하였거나 이동하고자 노력하였다. 또한 청년들은 서울·수도권의 이점과 수도권-지방 간 격차에 대한 인식을 공유하고 있었으며 ‘서울에 대한 환상과 동경’, ‘우물안 개구리’ 인식이라는 공통된 서울 지향을 보였다. 두 인식은 서울과 고향에 대한 장소감과 관련되며 청년들의 이동·정주에 영향을 미쳤다. 본 연구는 목포와 춘천 청년들이 가진 수도권 지향의 인식적 차원을 조명하고 지방 청년 전체로 논의를 확장하기 위한 기반을 마련하였다는 의의가 있다.

This study aims to analyze the decision-making processes and patterns of migration and settlement among young people from local areas and to identify a shared SMA(the Seoul Metropolitan Area)-oriented perception among young people from Mokpo and Chuncheon. Through in-depth interviews with 50 young people from the two cities, it was found that although they differ in terms of demographic, geographical, and educational characteristics, a significant number of them have either moved to or made efforts to move to SMA. Furthermore, they shared a common perception of the advantages of life in SMA and the disparities between SMA and local areas, along with a shared Seoul-oriented mindset characterized by ‘fantasies and longing for Seoul’ and a perception of being ‘frogs in wells.’ These perceptions are related to the sense of place regarding Seoul and their hometowns, and they influenced their migration and settlement decisions. This study sheds light on the perceptual dimensions of SMA-orientation among young people from Mokpo and Chuncheon and lays the foundation for expanding the discussion to the overall population of youth from local areas.
