관념론 철학자 칸트는 주관적 도덕성, 즉 주체의 자율적인 의지결정을 도덕의 본질로 파악했다는 점에서 규범적 근대성을 상징한다. 이렇게 보편적 실천이성이 주도하는 ‘도덕적 자율성’으로부터 의미 전화된 것이 개체적 자아가 중심이 되는 ‘자유주의적 자율성’인바, 이것은 주어진 상황-조건 속에서 최대한 합리적으로 선택-결정할 가능성 또는 불간섭-비지배적으로 자기결정할 가능성(능력)으로서의 자율성 차원이다. 바로 이런 자유주의적 자율성의 한계를 의식하며 새롭게 제시된 관념이 관계적 자율성이다. 이 관념은 자유주의적 개인주의를 비판하는 차원에서, 자아의 정체성은 (고립적으로가 아니라) ‘관계적’으로 형성되며, 개인의 자율성 능력은 ‘사회적 관계’에 의해 영향받는다고 설명한다. 결국 핵심은 인간의 자아 및 자율성에 대한 ‘사회적 구성성’이다. 이런 관계적 자율성의 원리는 정의 원리 및 민주주의 원리에도 밀접히 연결된다. 즉, 자율성 원리에 합치되는 삶을 사는 인격체는 동시에 사회적 정의의 원리 및 민주주의적 절차에 충실한 공동체의 구성원일 수 있다.

다양한 자율성의 난제를 해결하려는 관계적 자율성 관념의 지형도를 그려본다면, 절차주의적 관점과 실체주의적 관점 또는 인과적 관점과 구성적 관점 등으로 구별해볼 수 있다. 이 중 상당한 공감을 얻은 것이 자율성에 관한 절차주의적 관점이다. 이 이론은 자율성의 조건으로서 자기동기화나 선호 형성 등에 관한 반성 및 교정이라는 내적인 지적 과정을 핵심으로 여기며, 내용에는 중립적이다. 그러나 억압의 내재화가 행위자에게 미치는 영향을 제대로 평가하지 않는다는 문제가 있다. 그에 비해 실체주의적 이론은 자율성을 가치관련적으로 해석하여, 행위자의 선택 및 선호의 내용이 일정한 규범성에 합치할 때에만 자율적인 것으로 인정한다. 이 이론은 객관적, 규범적으로 자율성의 조건에 반하는 상태를 교정하려는 후견주의의 문제에 직면하게 된다.

관점들의 다양성 및 서로 간의 차이에도 불구하고, 관계적 자율성 이론에 공통된 자율성의 실현 계기는 사회관계 및 사회적 성찰이다. 즉, 아무런 사회적 경험적 전제나 맥락도 작동하지 않는 상태에서 비로소 자율적일 수 있는 것이 아니라, 사회적 관계 맥락 하에서만 자율적일 수 있다는 것이다. 그런 점에서 자율성에 관한 관계적 구상의 실천적 의미는 ‘관계로부터 자유로워지기’가 아니라 ‘억압으로부터 자유로워지기’라고 할 수 있다.
