시멘트 산업은 산업 부문 온실가스(GHG) 배출량의 약 10%를 담당하며, 대부분의 배출량은 시멘트 클링커 생산 과정에서 발생한다. 이를 해결하기 위해 시멘트 업계에서는 원료 대체 기술 개발, 새로운 저탄소 열원을 활용한 공정 효율성 향상, CO2 포집 및 활용 기술 적용 등의 기술 개발을 통해 온실가스 배출을 줄이기 위해 노력하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 CO2 재활용 기술을 활용하여 시멘트 산업의 CO2 배출 저감에 기여하기 위한 광물탄산화의 기초실험을 수행하였다. 본 연구에서는 CO2를 광물 형태로 전환시키기 위해 실험실 규모에서 칼슘 실리케이트 시멘트(CSC)를 제조하고, 탄산염 광물 상 및 강도 발현에 대한 분석을 수행하였다. CSC 클링커의 제조 및 분석 결과, 주요 광물인 규회석과 랭키나이트의 형성이 확인되었으며, CSC의 CO2 경화를 통해 방해석, 아라고나이트 등의 탄산염 광물이 형성되었다. 또한 탄산화 양생을 한 CSC 페이스트 시험편의 압축 강도 측정을 통해 강도 발달이 확인되었다. 결론적으로 본 연구는 CSC 생산의 타당성과 CO2 양생을 통한 압축강도 발현을 입증하여 시멘트 산업의 CO2 배출 저감에 기여할 수 있음을 보여준다.
