멸절론과 보편 구원론에 반대하여 어거스틴은 다음과 같은 영원한 형벌론의 세 가지 주요 논지를 제시한다. 첫째, 인간 영혼은 지옥의 형벌을 견딜 수 있는 창조된 불멸성을 지니고 있다. 어거스틴은 인간 영혼의 내재적 불멸성이라는 플라톤적 주장을 거절하고 플라톤 철학자들이 부인하는 부활을 통한 육체와 영혼의 영원한 연합을 주장한다. 둘째, 지옥의 형벌은 회복이나 멸절이 아닌 영원한 응보적 처벌을 위한 것이다. 성경은 사후 전도론에 기초한 구원의 가능성을 인정하지 않는다. 천국과 지옥의 병행구조는(마 25:46) 천국에서의 영생의 누림과 지옥에서의 고통의 형벌이 둘 다 영원한 것임을 보여준다. 셋째, 영원한 형벌은 하나님의 속성과 승리에 상응한다. 하나님의 사랑과 공의는 분리될 수 없다. 하나님은 창조물로서의 인간들을 사랑하지만, 동시에 죄의 본성을 지닌 그들에게 진노하신다. 공의로운 형벌은 죄가 행해진 시간의 길이가 아니라 범죄의 성격에 따라 결정된다. 그들이 무한한 하나님께 죄를 범하기 때문에, 그들에게는 영원한 형벌이 합당하다. 지옥에서 그들은 자신이 행한 악의 정도에 따라 형벌을 받는다. 지옥의 통치자는 마귀와 죄인이 아니라 하나님이다. 하나님은 그들은 자신의 주권적 통치 아래에서 영원히 벌을 내리실 것이다. 따라서 영원한 형벌은 하나님의 승리를 끊임없이 선포한다. 그리스도인은 영원한 형벌이라는 성경적 진리를 인간의 감성이 아닌 믿음으로 수용해야 한다.

In opposition to annihilationism and universalism, Augustine presents the following three main arguments for eternal punishment. First, the human soul has the created immortality that enables it to endure the punishment of hell. Augustine rejects the Platonic argument for the inherent immortality of the human soul and argues for the eternal union of body and soul through the resurrection, which the Platonists deny. Secondly, the punishment of hell is for eternal retribution, not redemption or annihilation. The Bible does not acknowledge the possibility of salvation based on postmortem evangelism. The parallel structure of heaven and hell(Matt. 25:46) shows that both the enjoyment of eternal life in heaven and the punishment of torment in hell are eternal. Thirdly, eternal punishment is commensurate with God’s attributes and victory. God’s love and justice are inseparable. God loves human beings as his creation, but at the same time he is angry with them for their sinful nature. They deserve eternal punishment because they sin against the infinite God. In hell, they are punished according to the degree of evil they have done. The ruler of hell is God, not the devil and sinners. God will punish them forever under his sovereign rule. Thus, eternal punishment constantly proclaims God’s victory. Christians must accept the biblical truth of eternal punishment by faith, not human sentiment.
