공감(sympathy/com-passio)은 현대인의 관심사이자 시대적 화두(話 頭) 가운데 하나다. 특히 교회를 향한 사회의 질문으로서 교회론적 차원에서 해명해야 할 중요한 주제이기도 하다. 그러나 교회는 사회적 화두(話頭)인 공감이라는 가치를 복음적 관점에서 주목하는가?

본 소론(小論)은 오늘날 사회가 재발견하여 주목하는 개념인 공감이 교회의 올바른 실천, 혹은 그리스도교 도덕의 영역에 신학적으로 자리매김할 수 있는지의 가능성을 모색한다. 이를 위해서 공감 교회론적 도덕실천을 위해 반드시 해명해야 할 문제들을 도덕 감정론을 추적하면서 살펴본다. 방법론적으로는 스위스 바젤(Basel) 대학의 윤리 철학자인 다그마 펜너(D. Fenner)의 주요 질문을 활용하였다. 즉, 도덕적 행위의 원천, 가치부여와 동기부여의 과정을 공감과 연결하여 논의의 방법론으로 삼는다. 특히, 공감의 결과로서 오해되는 ‘번 아웃’(burnout)의 문제를 “자기 배려”(Le souci de soi)(M. Foucault)의 개념으로 해명하면서 이를 성서의 “자기 부인”(막 8:34)과 연결한다. 또한, 공감 개념이 “가치 맹목적 혹은 가치 중립적”인 특징이 있음을 전제로, 이것이 오직 올바른 성서적, 교회론적 이해를 통해서만 해명될 수 있음을 밝히려 한다.

따라서 본 논문은 오늘날 교회를 향한 새로운 질문 가운데 하나인 공감의 문제를 공감의 원천(源泉), 가치와 동기부여와 교회론적으로 연결하여, 이를 근거로 교회의 도덕 실천을 펼치기 위한 신학적 담론과 방향성을 제시하려는 “교회를 위한 조언”(A. Jäger)이라 할 수 있다.

Sympathy(com-passio) is a contemporary concern and one of the central themes of society today. In particular, it is an important topic that needs to be explained at an ecclesiological level as it is a question society asks for the church. But is the church really paying attention to the value of sympathy, a social concern, from an evangelical perspective? This paper explores the possibility that sympathy, a concept that today’s society has rediscovered and is paying attention to, can be positioned theologically in the practice of the church and in Christian morality. In order to do so, I will examine the issues of sympathy that must be clarified for ecclesiological moral practice while tracing the development of the Theory of Moral Sentiments. The methodology is based on the main questions of the moral theory of D. Fenner, a philosopher of ethics at the University of Basel, Switzerland. Specifically, I developed a discussion by linking questions about the source of moral behavior and the process of valuation and motivation with the subject of the paper, sympathy. For example, it explains the situation where the problem of ‘burnout’ is misunderstood to be the result of sympathy with the concept of ‘self-care’(Selbst-sorge), and it then connects the sympathy related to the biblical concept of ‘self-denial’(Mk 8:34). In other words, since the cause of the misunderstanding lies in the discussion that presupposes the concept of empathy as “value-blind or value-neutral,” the attempt was to suggest that this can only be explained through proper biblical and ecclesiological understanding.

This paper therefore will take up the issue of empathy, which is one of the new questions facing the church today, at the level of ecclesiological understanding and practice, and the theological discourse of the source and value of empathy and the direction to motivate it will be presented as a “counsel for the church”(A. Jäger).
