This study classifies the revenge stories in Ihara Saikaku's(井原西鶴:1642-1693)'s Budodenraiki(武道伝来記,1687) by type, and determines what types of revenge stories repeatedly depict. The aim was to clarify the theme of the work.
As a result of the research, revenge was praised and rationalized in Budodenraiki as an aspect of murder that guaranteed the honor of a warrior, the honor of a Shudo, and the honor of a woman. However, most of the tangible revenge stories, such as revenge carried out to restore Shudo's dishonor after gossip, criticism, and misunderstanding, suicide and revenge by seppuku carried out by women, and revenge completed after a long period of wandering, often result in unnecessary deaths, and it came to a tragic end.
Thus we can say that the subject of Budodenraiki was intended, first, to reestablish the ethical value and perception of revenge among samurai warriors who are solidifying modern Japanese society, and second, to control indiscriminate praise and approval of revenge. This is because only through this subject awareness of the topic will the readers, the Chonin class, be able to agree on revenge, which is the highest value of the ruling warrior class, and suicide by seppuku, which is a ‘courtesy system.’
