18세기에 완성된 한양도성 – 북한산성 - 탕춘대성으로 이어지는 서울특별시의 관방유적(關防遺蹟)이 2022년 12월 세계유산 우선등재목록으로 선정되었다. 이러한 관방유적의 주요한 공간은 서울과 북한산이다. 서울은 전근대시기 북한산군 남평양 양주 목멱양 남경 한양부 한성부라 불렸다. 북한산은 부아악 삼각산 화산(華山) 등으로 불렸다. 이 글은 서울과 북한산의 다양한 역사를 시기별로 검토했다. 검토한 시기는 삼국시기에서 19세기 후반까지로 제한하여 고찰했다. 구체적으로 삼국시기 북한산과 한강이 지니는 전략적 가치, 고려시기 양주의 위상과 남경을 중심으로 한 수도 천도론, 조선시기 한양 천도와 이에 따른 한양 도성, 북한산성 및 탕춘대성의 수축과정과 의미를 고찰했다. 이를 통해 서울과 북한산이 한국사에서 차지하는 위상과 의미를 또한 고찰하려 했다.
