매개분석은 상담 분야에서 가장 널리 활용되는 연구방법론의 하나이다. Baron과 Kenny(1986)의 접근을 기본으로, 최근에는 다중매개, 조절된 매개와 같은 확장된 모형이 국내의 많은 상담연구에서 활발히 적용되고 있다. 그러나 2000년대 이후 인과추론(causal inference) 연구자들에 의해 본격적으로 발전하기 시작한 인과매개분석(causal mediation analysis)의 내용과 성과는 상담연구자들에게 상대적으로 잘 알려져 있지 않다. 매개효과의 정의 및 추정을 선형적 모형에 근거하고 있는 전통적인 접근과 달리, 인과매개분석은 매개효과의 본질에 집중하여, 그것이 무엇인지, 그것을 알기 위해서는 어떠한 가정과 분석이 필요한지에 관한 정교한 논의를 제공한다. 본 논문은 인과매개분석의 관점에서 볼 때, 국내 상담연구에서 상대적으로 간과되어 온 매개분석 시 통제변수의 활용, 원인변수-매개변수 간 상호작용, 민감도 분석에 대해 논의한다. 최근 개발된 인과매개분석 통계패키지를 활용한 상담연구 분석의 예시를 중심으로 구성하였고, 이러한 인과매개분석 접근이 상담 분야 연구에 주는 시사점을 논의하였다.

Mediation analysis is one of the most widely used research methods in counseling research. In addition to the basic approach outlined by Baron and Kenny (1986), various extensions, including multiple mediators and moderated mediation, have been actively applied in numerous counseling studies in Korea. However, causal mediation analysis, developed by causal inference researchers since the 2000s, remains relatively unfamiliar to counseling researchers in terms of its content and accomplishments. Unlike the traditional approach that defines and estimates mediating effects relying on simple linear models, causal mediation analysis focuses on the nature of mediation, providing a sophisticated discussion of what it is and what assumptions and analyses are needed to identify it. From the perspective of causal mediation analysis, this paper discusses the use of control variables, treatment-mediator interaction, and sensitivity analysis in mediation analysis, which have been relatively overlooked in Korean counseling research. We provide an illustrative example of counseling research analyses using a recently developed statistical package for causal mediation analysis and discuss the implications of the causal mediation approach for counseling research.
