The purpose of this paper is to outline the i–adjective–like usage of “–mitaku” in modern Japanese. “–mitaku” is originally made from na–adjective “mitai–na” and “mitai–ni”. Both “mitai–ni” and “–mitaku” mean “look like”, and now used in wider meanings: exemplification, similitude and euphemism. On examples in corpus (BCCWJ, CHJ, CHS), SNS (twitter), web news, comics and novels, “–mitaku” seems like to have been used from latter period of Showa, 1970s. It has widened its meaning to euphemism as a newer polite style “new vague expression”. Now people use double–standard tactics in polite style, “closer consideration” and “not–closer consideration”. Using the new and unfamiliar expression as “closer consideration” in close community can strengthen the connection and relation in the community. At the same time, using indirect expressions, “not–closer considearion” can mean adequate distance among users as a politeness. Euphemism such as “–mitaku” includes both character and seems to be useful for mainly 30s generations these days. However it has been the old–fashioned phrase already and seemed to become obsolete in near future.
