3作は太宰治の中期作品であり、｢水｣が共通している点が目についた。それに、｢魚服記｣をはじめ、翻案作である｢新釈諸国噺｣と｢お伽草紙｣の登場人物らもこの｢水｣を必ず接触し、変化を齎らせられ、彼らにプラスを与えていたことが興味深かった。理由と、太宰が指摘しようとしたことが何かを把握してみた。｢水｣の根本的な意味から探った結果、はじめて、｢水｣らしき｢水｣が文献に出てきたのは｢日本書紀｣｢風土記｣に当たり、海のことを指し、｢常世｣の国を意味していたことが分かった。｢水｣の接触戦後の違いは｢禊払い｣の影響であることが分かり、｢魚服記｣のスワや、｢お伽草紙｣の浦島太郎、雀爺さんたちが力づいたのもこれらと離れられないことを考えてみた。だからこそ、スワが心中自殺をしても、こっちからはなぜか暖かみのある落ちづきがあっただろう。｢魚服記｣が遺書であると言われても、遺書ではなく、前に進めていこうとした太宰の中期姿勢が伝えてきたのである。
