본 논문은 아세안-호주-뉴질랜드의 자유무역협정(AANZFTA)이 회원국으로의 외국인직접투자(FDI) 유입에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. AANZFTA가 외국인직접투자에 미치는 영향을 분석하기 위해, 본 논문은 2001~19년 패널 통계를 활용하여 Markusen and Venable (1999)의 연구에 의해 개발된 지식-자본 모형(knowledge- capital model)을 사용하였다. 이러한 모형을 통해 본 논문은 AANZFTA 회원국의 상이한 경제발전 수준과 다국적 기업(MNCs)의 수직적, 수평적 FDI 동기를 고려하였다. 분석 결과, 평균적으로 AANZFTA가 회원국들에게 일부 외국인직접투자를 희생시키는 대신 더 높은 수준의 무역을 촉진하는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 FDI 모국과의 생산 비용 차이가 클수록 AANZFTA 참여에 따른 회원국으로의 FDI 유입 효과가 큰 것으로 밝혀졌다. 또한, 수직적 및 수평적 FDI 또는 수출 플랫폼 FDI 모두 회원국으로 유입되었는데, FDI 유입 유형은 회원국의 경제발전 및 다변화 수준에 의존하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, FDI 호스트 국가의 산업화 수준이 높고 해당 국가가 개방적이고 투자 친화적 환경을 도모할 경우 AANZFTA 참여로 인한 FDI 유입 효과가 큰 것으로 나타났다. 이는 높은 산업화 수준과 개방적이고 투자 친화적 환경 도모를 통해 해당 국가의 제도적 질을 제고하고 보다 다양한 경제구조를 육성할 수 있기 때문인데, 특히 이러한 효과는 기존의 선진 회원국 보다는 개발도상 회원국가에게서 더 크게 나타났다.

This paper investigates the impact of the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand FTA (AANZFTA) on the flow of foreign direct investment (FDI) into AANZFTA members. To determine the overall effect of the AANZFTA on FDI inflow, this study utilizes the knowledge–capital model with panel data (2001–2019) while considering the different levels of economic diversification among AANZFTA members and both the vertical and horizontal motivations of multinational corporations (MNCs). The results suggest that, on average, the AANZFTA promotes a higher level of trade at the expense of some FDI for its members, although sufficiently large production cost differences compared with FDI parent countries allow them to attract net positive FDI inflow by participating in the AANZFTA. Both vertical FDI and horizontal or export platform FDI entered the member countries, with the type of FDI inflow depending on the level of economic diversification of the member countries. In addition, it turns out that higher levels of industrialization and the promotion of an open and investment-friendly environment in host countries, especially in developing countries, by upgrading institutional quality and fostering a more diversified economic structure would contribute to attracting more FDI from participating in the AANZFTA.
