｢제망매가｣는 고전문학에서 향가에 대한 관심과 이 향가가 함축하는 문제들에 대한 관심이라는 측면에서 국어학자들과 국문학자들에 의해 많은 연구가 이루어졌다. 이러한 연구들은 일차적으로는 ‘누이와의 사별에 따른 애절한 심정을 종교적인 구도의 자세로 승화시킨 작품’으로 간주하고, 좀 더 심화된 경우에는 이 작품을 통해 ‘삶의 허무성이나 불교적 내세관의 문제’ 등으로 해석하곤 한다. 그러나 이 작품이 안고 있는 고유한 시공간적 의미 외에도 이 작품에는 그것을 뛰어넘어 21세기의 독자들과 한국을 넘어서 세계인에게도 감동을 줄 수 있는 보편적 요소가 담겨 있다. 만일 이런 요소를 인정할 수 있다고 하면 이 작품은 국문학이나 불교의 관점을 넘어서 서양철학의 차원에서도 얼마든지 재해석될 수 있다고 본다. 이글은 ｢제망매가｣라는 향가에 드러난 죽음의 보편적 문제, 이를테면 죽음의 필연성과 우발성, 죽음에 대한 두려움과 사후 세계의 문제, 죽음과 삶의 관계 등에 대한 분석을 통해서 ｢제망매가｣를 단순히 ‘누이의 죽음에 대한 종교적 승화’로 보는 기존의 해석을 넘어서 보려고 한다. 필자가 보기에 ｢제망매가｣는 죽음에 대한 깊은 통찰을 통해 알 수 없는 사후의 세계 이상으로 살아있는 삶의 세계의 윤리와 연관되어 있다.

The ‘Jemangmae-ga’ has been studied by linguists and national literalists in terms of their interest in incense poetry and the issues it raises in classical Chinese literature. These studies firstly consider it as “a work that sublimates the mournful feelings of the bereavement of a sister into a religious compositional stance,” and then, at a deeper level, it is interpreted as “a problem of the futility of life or the Buddhist view of the afterlife” through this work. In addition to the unique spatial and temporal meaning of this work, it also contains universal elements that can transcend it and move readers in the 21st century and the world beyond Korea. If these elements can be recognized, the work can be interpreted not only from the perspective of Korean literature or Buddhism, but also from the perspective of Western philosophy. This article attempts to go beyond the conventional interpretation that ‘Jemangmae-ga’ is simply a religious sublimation of the death of a sister by analyzing the universal issues of death, such as the inevitability and contingency of death, the fear of death and the problem of the afterlife, and the relationship between death and life. In my view, ‘Jemangmae-ga’ provides a deep insight into death and reveals that it is connected to the ethics of life beyond the unknown afterlife.
