본 논문에서는 길버트와 설리번의 협업 작품 중 첫 성공작이라고 평가받는 《군함 피나포어》의 음악적 희극성을 연구한다. 이 작품은 플롯과 주인공들의 행동에 있어 모순적이고 불일치적인 면이 많기 때문에 극 자체가 희극적인데, 음악이 이러한 희극성을 보강시킨다. 먼저 설리번은 극의 상황과 맞지 않는 장엄하고 애국적 분위기의 음악, 예를 들면 바로크 풍의 텍스쳐와 종지, 웅장한 헨델의 음악, 그리고 영국 해군에서 자주 불러지는 《지배하라, 브리타니아여!》를 사용하여 음악적 희극성을 이룬다. 극 중에서 우스꽝스럽게 풍자된 포터 경과 코코란 함장에 대해서는 인물과 맞지 않는 용맹스럽고 애국심을 드러내는 음악을 사용한다. 대립되는 인물들에 대해서는 서로 상반되는 혹은 다른 대조되는 음악적 요소를 결합시키거나, 동일한 음악적 요소에 대한 이중적 해석을 통하여 음악적 희극성이 성취된다. 이 논문은 설리번의 음악적 기법을 재평가한다는 점에서 학문적 의의가 있으며, 또한 영국의 19세기 후반 코믹오페라와 미국의 오페레타에서 보여지는 음악적 희극성을 고찰하는 데에도 일조할 것이라고 판단된다.

This paper examines how comicality is represented in the music of H.M.S. Pinafore (1878), the first successful collaboration between William Schwenck Gilbert(1836-1911) and Arthur Sullivan(1842-1900). The play itself is comic because of the many contradictions and conflicts in the plot and the behaviour of the main characters, and the music reinforces the comicality. The composer achieves the musical comicality by using music with a majestic and patriotic tone, such as the baroque textures and cadences, the grandiose music of Georg Friedrich Händel, and Rule, Britannia! often sung by British sailors, that does not fit the context of the play. For Sir Joseph Porter and Captain Corcoran, satirized in the play, Sullivan uses the music that portrays bravery and patriotism in conflict with the characters' personality. Musical comicality is also achieved by combining opposing musical elements or dual interpretations of the same melody, for characters in opposing relationships. This paper is significant in that it reevaluates Sullivan's musical techniques and, as further studies, it contributes to the examination of musical comicality in the American operetta as well as in the late nineteenth-century British comic operas.
