리스트는 최고의 비르투오소 피아니스트이자 바이마르 궁정음악감독으로 활동하다가 성직자가 되었다. 그러한 이유로 대중적이고 세속적인 삶을 살았던 사람의 종교적 태도가 얼마나 진실할 수 있는가 하는 질문이 제기되어 왔다. 이 연구는 리스트의 교향시와 피아노곡 연구가 활발한 데 비해, 예술작품의 신학적, 철학적 함의에 있어서 그의 종교적 태도와 종교합창음악에 관한 국내 연구가 미흡하다는 문제의식에서 비롯되었다. 교회의 권위와 교회음악의 위상이 변모하던 시기에 대규모의 미사, 레퀴엠, 오라토리오를 비롯한 전통적인 종교음악 장르들을 공들여 작곡했다는 점이 통상 진보적이고 미래지향적인 작곡가로 알려진 리스트의 음악관과 어떻게 조화를 이루는가 하는 질문에 근거하여, 이 연구는 리스트의 진보적인 면모를 재고하고, 교회음악의 전통 소재 활용법에서의 특이점을 그의 종교합창곡을 통해 규명해 보았다. 이를 위해 첫째로 리스트의 사회의식과 기독교 세계관에 영향을 주었을 요인들을 추적하고 그러한 사상을 담은 글에서 리스트의 목소리를 들어보았고, 둘째로 그의 음악관과 종교관의 배경이 된 동시대의 ‘미래의 음악’과 교회음악에 관한 논의를 살펴보았으며, 마지막으로 그 결과물이라 볼 수 있는 작품들, 특히 오라토리오 『성 엘리자베트의 전설』과 『그리스도』를 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 리스트의 사회 인식과 미래지향적 관점을 보여주는 글인 “예술가의 위상과 사회에서의 상황에 관하여”의 성명서와 “미래의 교회음악에 관하여”에서 라므네의 영향을 읽어보았고, 그러한 초기의 견지가 예술가의 사회적 소명을 담은 “제니 오블리주” 개념을 형성하고 삶에서 어떻게 실천되었는지 확인할 수 있었다. 종교합창음악과 함께 비평문과 서신들에도 풍부히 흔적을 남긴 리스트의 교회음악에 대한 열의와 실천 의지는 전통의 탐구에 바탕을 두고 있으면서도, 조화를 이루기 어려워 보이는 것들의 조화, 즉 가장 전통적인 것과 가장 진보적인, 그리고 가장 종교적인 것과 가장 세속적인, 예술적 재료와 방법의 놀라운 조화를 이루어냈다.

Franz Liszt was one of the greatest virtuoso pianists of his time and Kapellmeister at the Weimar court before becoming a priest. It raises questions about the authenticity of the religious attitudes of a man who led a secular life. This study was motivated by the problem that, while Liszt's symphonic poem and piano music have been well-studied, there is a lack of domestic research on his religious choral music in terms of the theological and philosophical implications of art work. By examining what it means that Liszt painstakingly composed traditional religious genres during a time when the church authority and the status of church music was in upheaval, this study reconsiders the progressive aspects of Liszt and identifies the way he utilised the material of traditional church music in his religious choral works. To do so, this study explored Liszt's social consciousness and Christian faith through his writings, considers contemporary debates about ‘music of the future’ and church music, and analyses his religious choral works, The Legend of St. Elizabeth and Christus in particular. This study examined the context that shaped Liszt's social awareness and progressive views, particularly the influence of Félicité de Lamennais as reflected in his articles “On the Position of the Artist and His Condition in Society” and “On Church Music of the Future”, and how this view was put into practice, forming his concept of “Génie oblige.” Liszt's commitment to the church music, evident in his music and writings, was based on his research into tradition and yet resulted in a remarkable blend of the most traditional and the most progressive, the most religious and the most secular, of materials and methods.
