This study examines the role of quotatives in two Korean translations of Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea. Quotatives, which indicate shifts in conversational tone and footing between participants, are analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively to understand their impact on the narrative. For analytical clarity, they are categorized into zero quotatives and general quotatives. Moreover, each speech event is segmented into multiple frames, each potentially conveying a different conversational tone. The study performs a comparative analysis of the entire dialogue from both the original text and the two translations, highlighting how shifts occur in translation. The findings suggest that translators should thoroughly grasp the stylistic features of the original text and that a detailed analysis of quotatives can provide a novel approach to assessing literary translation.
