During the the modern transition period, there were many political and economic hardships in Korea. Many people left for Manchuria for a better life. Because Manchuria was a part of the Gojoseon Dynasty(古朝鮮), Koreans thought it was a lost old territory. In addition, the land was fertile and the population was scarce. So people thought it was the most ideal migration destination. Jang(張錫英) had this idea, but the situation he saw after arriving in Manchuria was different from what he knew. In 1912, Manchuria was no longer Paradise due to the increasing number of migrants. By 1913, it was taken for granted that Manchuria was no longer a Paradise.

The purpose of Jang's trip to Manchuria was to investigate where he would immigrate. Even for the same Confucian scholars, their migration goals were not exactly consistent. Yoo(柳麟錫) preferred somewhere close to korea and could participate in the independence movement, but he wanted a place where he could live while keeping ours, even if he did not achieve his will. Lee(李相龍) wanted the most suitable area for independence movement. Jang's idea was different from those of them. He made preserving Confucian values more important than independence. Lee(李承熙) thought that the shift from restoring sovereignty to preserving Confucian values as of 1910.
