이 논문은 옥천(玉川) 조덕린(趙德鄰)의 제문 가운데 친족을 대상으로 쓴 작품을 살펴 애도방식의 특징과 의미를 살펴본 것이다. 제문은 흔히 망자를 칭송하고 애도하는 내용을 중심으로 실용적 목적을 지닌 채 창작되는 것이 보통이며, 이러한 이유로 관습적으로 창작되기도 한다. 하지만 그 대상이 친족일 경우 슬픔의 감정을 더욱 진솔하게 표출하는 경우가 많다.

『옥천집』에 실린 제문은 모두 20편이다. 조덕린이 그리워한 대상은 친족을 비롯하여 스승, 교유하던 인물 등 다양하다. 특히 주목할 만한 점은 가족이나 친족을 대상으로 지은 제문의 수가 전체 작품의 절반 이상을 차지한다는 점이다. 이는 실제의 삶과 관계를 토대로 하였기 때문에 규격화된 격식이나 상투적 표현에만 얽매여 작품이 창작되지 않았음을 보여주는 것이기도 하다. 그는 출사 후 당쟁에서 비롯된 삶의 굴곡 속에서 가까운 이들의 죽음을 많이 맞이하였는데, 이는 문집에 실린 제문을 통해서 알 수 있다.

조덕린의 제문은 단순히 슬픔의 정서를 드러내거나 삶을 추모하는 데서 그치지 않는 특징이 있다. 망자와 함께했던 순간의 기억을 생생하게 재현해 내거나 죽음에 대한 자책을 심화시키는 것으로 애도를 표현한다. 망자가 실제로 작자에게 했던 말을 기억하거나, 그가 죽음에 이르면서 남긴 말 등을 직접 제시하여 현장감을 살리고자 한 것이다. 또한 망자와의 관계를 부각하고 그가 죽음에 있어 스스로 후회스러웠던 점을 되뇌어 그의 삶과 죽음이 자신과 밀접한 관련을 지니고 있음을 드러내고자 한 특징이 있다. 이는 그가 제문의 대상들과 단순한 교유 관계가 아니라, 사적으로 친밀한 관계를 지니고 있었기 때문으로 이해할 수 있다. 또한 삶과 죽음의 간극을 이해하는 과정을 통해 상실의 현실을 인정하고 그 관계를 되새기며 슬픔을 치유하고자 한 것이다.

This paper examines the characteristics and meaning of mourning methods by examining works written for relatives among in Okcheon(玉川) Cho Deok-rin(趙德鄰)’s Jemun(祭文). The writings are usually created with a practical purpose, centering on the content of praising and mourning the dead, and for this reason, they are also customarily created. However, when the object is a relative, the feelings of sadness are often expressed in sincerity.

There are a total of 20 offerings in the 󰡔Okcheonjip󰡕. Cho Deok-rin(趙德鄰) missed various objects, including relatives, teachers, and people she met. Particularly noteworthy is that the number of offerings to family members or relatives accounts for more than half of the total works. This also shows that works were not created because they were based on real life and relationships, bound only to standardized forms or clichés. After entering the military, he faced many deaths of those close to him amid the twists and turns of life arising from the Tang Dynasty, which can be seen through the offerings in the collection.

Cho Deok-rin(趙德鄰)’s Jemun(祭文) has a characteristic that does not stop at simply revealing emotions of sadness or commemorating life. Expresses mourning by vividly recreating the memories of the moment with the deceased or deepening the blame for death. It was intended to revive the sense of reality by remembering what the deceased actually said to the author or by directly presenting what he left when he reached his death. It is also characterized by highlighting his relationship with the deceased and reminding him of his own regrets about his death to reveal whether his life and death are closely related to him. This can be understood because he was not simply in a relationship with the objects of his worship, but had a close relationship in private. Through the process of understanding the gap between life and death, he acknowledged the reality of loss, reflected on the relationship, and tried to heal his sadness.
