철학사에서 면면히 이어오는 사랑에 관한 담론은 현대에 와서 새로운 국면을 맞이한다. 과학의 발전은 모든 것을 소립자나 미립자와 같은 물질적인 것으로 해명하려하고, 특히 인간의 진화와 세계 진화를 ‘과정철학’이라는 이름 아래 일종의 유물론적 관점에서 새롭게 조명하고자 한다. 이러한 흐름에 맞서 진화현상 그 자체를 일종의 신의 섭리의 한 ‘현현’처럼 고찰하고 있는 떼이야르 드 샤르댕의 사랑에 관한 이론은 우리의 관심을 집중시킨다. 그에게 있어 형이상학이란 전체를 하나로 보는 것을 의미하며, 그리하여 그는 가장 단순한 질료적 현상에서 생명의 진화, 의식의 출현, 인간현상 나아가 신적 사랑이 표상되는 신비적 현상에 이르기까지 모든 하나의 지평에서 수용되는 새로운 형이상학 즉, ‘사랑이 지배하는 통일의 형이상학(une Métaphysique de l'Union dominée par l'Amour)’을 제시하고 있다.

그에게 있어서 사랑은 ‘물질을 존재하게 하는 우주적 에너지’이며, 생명 진화의 중심원리이며, 나아가 의식 탄생의 원인이자 타자를 수용할 수 있는 탈중심의 원리이다. 마지막으로는 사랑은 진화의 완성이요, 인류적 진보의 궁극적 목적지인 “초월적인 것” 혹은 오메가 포인트로 수렴하게 하는 원리가 된다. 이러한 변모의 과정을 통해 궁극적으로 이 사랑은 ‘유일한 신적 사랑(Sola caritas)’으로 변모되는 것이다. 이러한 샤르댕 신부의 사유는 단순한 추론이나 가정이 아니다. 그는 이를 세계 안에서 직접 목도한 ‘사랑의 경험’ 이라고 말하고 있다.

The discourse on love that has continued throughout the history of philosophy is entering a new phase in modern times. The development of science seeks to explain everything in terms of material things such as elementary particles or fine particles, and in particular, seeks to shed new light on human evolution and world evolution from a kind of materialistic perspective under the name of ‘process philosophy.’ Against this trend, Teilhard de Chardin's theory of love, which considers the phenomenon of evolution itself as a kind of ‘manifestation’ of divine providence, focuses our attention. For him, metaphysics means seeing the whole as one, and thus he seeks to create new ideas that can be accepted in all horizons, from the simplest material phenomena to the evolution of life, the emergence of consciousness, human phenomena, and even mystical phenomena that represent divine love. It presents metaphysics, that is, ‘the metaphysics of unity governed by love For him, love is ‘the universal energy that makes matter exist,’ the central principle of life evolution, and furthermore, the cause of the birth of consciousness and the principle of decentering that can accommodate others. Lastly, love is the completion of evolution and the principle that leads to convergence to the “transcendent thing” or Omega Pointer, the ultimate destination of human progress. Through this process of transformation, this love is ultimately transformed into ‘the only divine love (Sola caritas).’ Father Chardin’s thoughts are not simple inferences or assumptions. He refers to this as an‘experience of love’ that he personally witnessed in the world. (une Métaphysique del'Union dominée par l'Amour).’
