This paper discusses the concept of the Japanese word hinsee (品性), which is the Chinese loanword made for loan translation of “character” through joint research in linguistics and history. First, a linguistic analysis of Japanese corpora shows that hinsee indicates a person’s good or desirable character according to moral standards. Subsequently, an analysis of historical documents reveals the following two points: (1) The hinsee’s concept in modern Japanese has no direct connection to the usage of the first example of this word in the Japanese translation of Samuel Smiles’s Self Hep translated by Nakamura Masanao. (2) The usage of this word in the Herbart School of Pedagogy in the 1890s is directly linked to the concept of this word in the modern language. The school used this word to describe a person’s desirable character according to the norm (the national moral code), which should be enhanced through education. This term spread as an academic term throughout teacher-training schools and was established as an educational concept. This concept forms the basis of the concept of hinsee in modern Japanese.

本稿は、「character」の翻訳漢語「品性」について、現代語での概念とその形成過程を言語学と歴史学の共同研究によって明らかにした。まず、コーパスの実例分析によって現代の日常語としての「品性」の概念を明らかにした。現代語の「品性」は、原語「character」とは異なり、道徳的規準に照らし合わせて高い状態が望ましいような人の内面を表す。次に、歴史資料の分析によって学術用語としての「品性」の概念の形成過程を明らかにした。「品性」の最初の例とされる中村正直『西国立志編』での使用は、現代語の「品性」の概念とつながりがなく、直接つながるのは1890年代に勃興したヘルバルト派教育学での使用である。この学派は「品性」を、あるべき規範(国家的道徳規範)となる基準にしたがって評価され、教育により高めることが求められる人の内面として用いた。これが学術用語として師範学校などを通して広がり、教育的な概念として成立していった。そしてこの概念がもとになり、現代語での概念が形成されたのである。
