매체는 모든 회화의 바탕이 되기 때문에 수채화의 매체가 수채화의 모습을 결정한다. 수채화 예술에서 독특한 재료 요구 사항은 이러한 유형의 예술 작품을 보다 유연하고 자유롭게 만드는 동시에 독특한 창작 조직 구조를 만든다. 시대가 발전함에 따라 어떤 종류의 그림이든 도구 재료, 매체 기법, 조작 방법, 그리고 미적 문화가 변화한다. 독립적인 회화 형태로서 수채화의 발전 과정은 시대에 따라 지속적으로 진화하고 업데이트되며 이 과정에서 매체 재료도 지속적으로 업데이트되고 변경된다. 이러한 연구의 배경에서 본 연구의 목적은 주로 전통 수채화와 현대 수채화의 비교 분석을 통해 현대 미술 수채화에서 매체의 가치와 의미를 밝히는 것이다. 위의 연구 목적을 달성하기 위해 본 연구에서는 사례 분석 방법을 사용하였다. 첫째, 전통적인 수채화와 현대적인 수채화의 재료와 형태를 별도로 설명하여 그 변화와 차이점을 설명하였다. 그런 다음 전통 수채화와 현대 수채화의 매체 활용 범주를 비교하여 분석하였다. 마지막으로 사례 연구를 통해 현대 미술에서 수채화와 매체의 다양성을 추가로 설명하였다. 본 연구에서는 수채화의 표현 기법에서 다양한 재료와 도구를 충분히 이해하고 활용함으로써 전통적인 수채화가 나타내는 투명성과 유동성의 특징을 극복했다고 결론지었다. 현대 수채화는 수채화 윤색 매체제, 소 담즙, 수채화 증색제 등의 현대 재료를 사용하고 디지털 매체와 동판화를 결합하여 다층적 중첩과 다중 효과의 표현 형식을 보여준다. 따라서 현대 수채화는 다른 회화 형식과 비슷한 표현력을 자유롭게 보여줄 뿐만 아니라 수채화의 독특한 회화적 특징을 그대로 간직하고 있다.
