이 글은 『『오뇌의 무도』 주해』의 의미를 한국 근대번역문학 연구의 지형도 속에서 파악한 것이다. 『오뇌의 무도』는 번역시집이면서도 발표 당시부터 ‘우리 문단’의 기념비적 소산으로 인정받았으며 한국 근대시와 시어(詩語)를 배태한 기원적 성격을 지니고 있었다. 『『오뇌의 무도』 주해』는 저본과의 텍스트 비교 분석을 가장 첨예한 방식으로 수행한 성과들의 총집산이다. 그리고 그 작업을 다름 아닌 『오뇌의 무도』라는 역사적 텍스트를 대상으로 수행함으로써 번역문학 연구뿐 아니라 한국 근대문학 연구 전체에도 큰 시사점을 갖게 되었다. 주해자는 중역(重譯)과 복수의 저본들로 얽혀있던 『오뇌의 무도』라는 실타래를 낱낱이 풀어 해침으로써 한국 근대문학의 한 기원에 동화되어 있던 서구 근대문학을 향한 강박증을 전경화했다. 이는 한국 근대문학 연구에 남겨진 과제가 여전히 다대하며, 예상보다 훨씬 중층적일 수밖에 없다는 점을 의미한다.

This article explores the significance of Annotation of Dance of Agony within the landscape of research on modern Korean (translated) literature. A collection of translated poems, Dance of Agony was recognized as a monumental achievement of “Korean literature” upon its publication, offering a proto-language for modern Korean poetry and poetic language. Annotation of Dance of Agony is a culmination of the sharpest comparative textual analyses of the source text. Through the historical weight of such an analysis, Annotation offers significant insights not only for translation studies but also for studies of modern Korean literature. The annotator reveals the obsession for modern Western literature that was embedded in the origin of modern Korean literature by untangling the indirect translations and multiple source texts of Dance of Agony. This implies that modern Korean literature studies face an agenda that is vaster and more multi-layered than expected.
