경전은 텍스트(Text)와 컨텍스트(Context) 간의 상호작용 가운데 형성된다. 그렇게 형성된 경전은 시대에 따라 끊임없는 해석과 가르침 속에서 인간의 삶을 규정하기도 해방하기도 한다.

본 논문은 활발한 텍스트(Text)와 컨텍스트(Context) 간의 상호작용을 바탕으로 오늘날까지 많은 영향을 미치고 있는 정토불교의 인간이해와 구원론을 바탕으로 여성관에 대해서 고찰한다.

정토불교에서 바라보는 구원의 대상은 범부(凡夫)를 포함한 중생 전체이다. 구원의 문은 모든 이에게 열려있다. 그러나 정토삼부경의 하나인 『무량수경(無量壽經)』의 48대원 중 제35원의 내용은 마치 구원에 있어서 여자는 제약(制約)이 있는 것처럼 전개가 된다. 과연 여자는 혐오의 대상이며, 정토불교에서는 여성불성불론(女性不成佛論)을 주장하는 것인지에 대한 문제제기를 시작으로, 제35원의 범본(梵本)과 각 시대상이 반영된 역본들을 비교 분석함으로써 본원의 뜻을 파악하고자 한다.

경전 속 여성에 대한 부정적인 내용을 시대상의 반영이라는 해명적 접근에서 한 걸음 더 나아가야 한다. 경전 속 여성소외적 혹은 차별적 내용은 그 이야기에만 혹은 과거 사회상에만 한정된 것이 아니라, 오늘날에도 빈번히 일어나고 있고, 적용 가능한 매우 일반적인 ‘소외’에 대한 ‘고발’이기 때문이다. 따라서 『무량수경(無量壽經)』 제35원의 여성에 대한 고찰을 통해서, 폭력과 소외가 당연시되는 이 사회에 성(性)을 넘어 모든 소외자를 위한 해방과 자유를 선포하는 ‘인간화(人間化)’의 길을 모색해본다.

The scriptures are formed during the interaction between text and context. Such an interaction not only defines but also liberates human life.

Based on the active interaction between text and context, this paper examines the view of women based on the human understanding and salvation theory of Pure Land Buddhism, which has a lot of influence to this day.

The object of salvation seen in Pure Land Buddhism is universal. The door to salvation is open to everyone. However, the contents of the 35th among the 48 members of The Larger Sukhāvatīvyuha Sūtra unfolds as if there were restrictions on women in salvation. Starting with the question of whether women are the object of hatred and whether the Sect of Pure Land claims to be unfaithful to women, the original meaning is to be deduced by studying the Chinese and English versions reflecting each era of the 35th member.

It is necessary to take a step further from the explanatory approach of reflecting the negative content of women in the scriptures. This is because the alienation or discriminatory content of women in the scriptures is not limited to the story or the past society, but is a "accusation" against the very general "alienation" that occurs frequently today and is applicable.

Therefore, through the consideration of women in No. 35 of the The Larger Sukhāvatīvyuha Sūtra, we will seek a path to "humanization" that declares freedom and freedom for all marginalized people beyond sex in this society where violence and alienation are taken for granted.
