본 연구는 중국의 고전소설 ≪홍루몽≫의 서사 공간, 특히 작품 내 인물들의 애정 서사가 벌어지는 공간의 특성에 대해 고찰하는 것을 주요 목적으로 한다. ≪홍루몽≫의 서사 공간은 단순한 플롯의 배경을 넘어 인물의 개성과 주제를 표상하는 의식 공간으로서 중요한 의미를 가진다. 본 연구는 푸코의 ‘헤테로토피아’ 개념을 적용하여, ≪홍루몽≫의 서사 공간이 가진 특성을 대안적으로 해석하는 한편, 이를 다의적으로 다른 서사에 수용하는 양상을 분석하여, 이를 통해 새로운 학술적 관점을 제시하고자 한다. 특히, ≪홍루몽≫의 서사 공간을 해석해 온 경향이 궁극적으로 작품의 주제와 구조에 대한 이해와 수용의 방향을 좌우하였음을 밝히고, 이를 바탕으로 서사 공간에 대한 확장된 논의를 유도해야 할 의의를 규명한다. 이를 통해 ≪홍루몽≫의 서사 공간에 대한 새로운 해석을 시도하는 것은 그 결과를 토대로 향후 중국 애정 소설의 상호 비교 연구에서도 중요한 분석틀이 될 가능성을 내포한다는 점을 제시한다.
