막스 셸러(M. Scheler)의 철학적 업적은 크게 세 가지이다. 그 하나는 칸트 윤리학의 반정립으로 ‘실질적 가치 윤리학’을 정립한 것이고, 다른 하나는 만하임과 함께 ‘지식사회학’을 구축한 것이며, 끝으로 ‘철학적 인간학’의 창시를 들 수 있다. 이러한 셸러의 철학적 여정은 서로 밀접한 관련이 있는데, 종래에 셸러 연구자들은 셸러의 철학적 사유의 형성을 ―그의 종교적 태도 변화를 중심으로― 세 시기로 구분하고, 각 시기에 나타나는 철학적 특징을 서술하는 데 그치고 있다. 이러한 서술은 철학적으로 고뇌하는 셸러의 참모습을 그려낼 수 없다. 셸러의 저술은 양적으로 방대하지만, 내용상으로 보면 자신의 철학적 지향을 밝힌 부분과 자신의 철학적 구상을 보강하는 부분으로 이루어져 있다. 본 연구에서는 이 중에서 셸러의 철학적 업적을 ‘실질적 가치 윤리학’의 정립, ‘지식사회학’과 ‘철학적 인간학’의 창시라는 관점에 두고, 이들이 성립된 맥락을 고찰하였다. 더욱이 2024년과 2028년은 각각 셸러 탄생 150주년과 서거 100주년이 되는 해이다. 이러한 뜻깊은 해를 맞이하여 셸러의 철학적 여정을 음미하면서 오늘날 문제 상황에 셸러의 철학이 어떻게 적용될지를 음미하는 것이 이 글의 목적이다.

This article was written to commemorate the philosophical achievements of Max Scheler(1874-1928). Scheler’s philosophical achievements are largely threefold. One is the establishment of ‘non-formal value ethics’ as an antithesis of Kantian ethics, the other is the establishment of ‘sociology of knowledge’ with Mannheim, and finally the creation of ‘philosophical anthropology’. These achievements of Scheler are closely related to each other, which is why it is called Scheler’s Philosophical Journey. But existing Scheler researchers have divided the formation of Scheler’s philosophical thinking into three periods centered on his religious attitude changes and have limited themselves to describing the philosophical characteristics that appear in each period. This description cannot portray the true picture of Scheler, who was in philosophical agony. Scheler’s writings are voluminous in quantity, but in terms of content, they consist of parts that reveal his philosophical orientation and parts that reinforce his philosophical conception. Among them, we examine Scheler’s philosophical achievements from the perspective of establishing ‘non-formal value ethics’ and the creation of ‘sociology of knowledge’ and ‘philosophical anthropology’, and examine the causal context in which they were established. This year (2024) marks the 150th anniversary of Max Scheler's birth, and 2028 marks the 100th anniversary of his death. In this meaningful year, we will reflect on Scheler’s philosophical journey and how his philosophy can be applied to today’s problematic situations. This is the purpose of this article.
