Airen Comrade(爱人同志) is a work that takes as its temporal background the political turbulence immediately after the Cultural Revolution and the period of social and cultural upheaval in China due to reform and opening up in the 1980s. This work can be said to be a metaphor and allegory for the real contemporary Chinese society.

At the same time, this work is a depiction of the relationship between individuals and the times, a narrative of war between men and women living in a turbulent real society, and a reflection on ideology and personality itself, while also delving deeply into the multi-layered and complex relationships that exist between them. This is a work written using flexible language.

The temporal background of the work was set from the late 1970s to the early 1990s in contemporary China. As is well known, the changes that occurred during this period in China’s social, cultural, economic, and political areas were unprecedented. Compared to the huge influence of social and political discourse that existed in this huge historical background, how small was the range of choices that individuals could make and the abilities they could exercise. As a writer and personality explorer full of curiosity about humans in the times, Ai Wei persistently continued to investigate and question ‘humans.’ In order to embody this personality holistically, Airen Comrade focuses on depicting the inner psychology and state of the character by describing the character itself rather than focusing on peripheral elements such as dialogue, environment, and story line. Through this, the various aspects of the human inner world and the meaning of desire, emotion, consideration, curiosity, impulse, inferiority, strength, vulnerability, and dignity as a spectrum expressed by the depth and breadth of the human inner world are understood, and furthermore, various ways of expressing it are expressed. It made me think about the factors and at the same time gave me a deeper understanding of human life and humanity itself.
