세계가 하나의 시공간으로 묶이는 현대 사회에서 지역의 특수성을 명확히 구분하기는 매우 어렵다. 그러나 보편적 특성만으로 채워지는 지역은 없다. 부산을 드러내는 지형적 특성 중 하나는 ‘바다’이며, 따라서 ‘바다’를 배제하고 지역성을 말하기는 어려울 것이다. 그것은 바다에 대해 말하는 지역민들의 언어 속에서도 드러난다. 지역민들의 바다에 대한 인식은 지역에서 채록된 이야기들에서 구체화된다.

논의에서는 󰡔부산구술문화총서󰡕의 바다 관련 설화를 13개로 분류하고, 이를 부산에 밀착된 이야기와, 바다에 초점화된 이야기로 이분화하여 살폈다. 부산의 이야기들이 부산의 지형, 부산의 역사, 갯벌 없는 부산의 바다와 관련된다면, 바다에 관련된 이야기들은 바다가 있는 지역이라면 공통적으로 채록되는 유형과 유사하다.

그러나 바다 관련 설화들이 광포 설화와 유사하다 하여 ‘부산’이라는 지역성을 드러내지 않는 것은 아니다. 왜냐하면 부산 설화에서 발견되는 바다의 특수성은 부산의 지형, 과거, 현재, 지역민에게서 도출되기 때문이다. ‘어디의 누구에게 어떤 장소로 기능하/했는가’ 이 질문에 대한 답이 바다를 부산의 바다로 만든다.

In today’s world, where everything is interconnected in a single space-time, it is very difficult to clearly distinguish the specific characteristics of a region. However, no region is filled solely with universal traits. One of the geographical features that reveals Busan is the sea, and therefore, it would be challenging to discuss locality without considering the sea. This is evident in the language of the locals when they talk about the sea. The local people’s perception of the sea is concretized in the stories collected from the region.

I classified the sea-related folklore in the Busan Oral Culture Series into 13 categories and examined them by dividing them into stories closely tied to Busan and those focused on the sea. While the stories of Busan are related to its geography, history, and its sea without tidal flats, the sea-related stories are similar to those commonly collected in other coastal regions.

However, the fact that sea-related folktales resemble those from other regions does not mean that they lack the distinctiveness of ‘Busan’. This is because the unique characteristics of the sea found in Busan’s folktales are derived from its geography, history, present circumstances, and local people. The question, ‘To whom did/dose a space function as what kind of place?’ provides an answer that makes the sea distinctly Busan’s.
