본 연구는 한국 근현대 소설 삽화의 상호텍스트적 미학에 관한 탐구라는 큰 주제 아래, 소설 삽화가 어떻게 동시대의 다른 문화적·예술적 현상과 소통하고 있는지 그 구체적인 양상을 살피는 데에 주요한 목표가 있다. 소설 삽화를 단순히 신문연재소설란이라는 특수한 공간의 예외적인 현상으로만 이해하는 것이 아니라, 동시대 예술의 다양한 현상과 소통하는 역동적인 예술로 바라봄으로써, 기존 소설 삽화 이론 연구의 한계를 뛰어넘는, 말 그대로 탈장르의 소설 삽화 연구를 제안해 보려는 것이다.

특히, 1970년대 신문연재소설 삽화의 미적 원리와 그 장르적 전이를 검토하고 있는 이번 연구에서는, ｢별들의 고향｣(최인호 소설, 김영덕 삽화, 이장호 영화)을 중심으로 이 시기 소설, 삽화, 영화의 상호 교섭을 탐구하고자 한다. 1970년대 문화계의 가장 중요한 현상으로 신문연재소설의 상업적 흥행과 함께 문학과 미술, 영화의 활발한 교섭이 존재했음을 감안해 본다면, 당대의 문제작으로서 ｢별들의 고향｣을 통해 장르와 매체를 자유롭게 넘나드는 상호소통적 예술 미학을 탐색하는 일이 가능하다고 믿기 때문이다.

무엇보다, 이 시기 소설의 대중적 흥행과 소설 문학의 영화적 각색의 과정을 제대로 논하기 위해서, 그동안 간과되었던 소설 삽화와 영화의 관계를 재검토하는 작업은 본 연구의 가장 중요한 부분을 차지하게 될 것이다. 삽화가 보여주는 시각적인 이미지들이 소설 서사에 대한 이해와 감동을 배가(倍加)시키고, 독자들의 머릿속에서 이야기 세계의 창조적 변용을 자극하는 감수성의 원천이 된다는 점에 주목한다면, 결국 시각적, 조형적 예술로서 소설 삽화가 당대의 영화에 새로운 영감을 주었을 가능성 또한 분명히 존재하기 때문이다.

This study aims to explore the intertextual aesthetics of illustrations in modern and contemporary Korean novels, focusing on how these novel illustrations interact with other contemporary cultural and artistic phenomena. Rather than understanding novel illustrations merely as an exceptional occurrence in the specific space of serialized novels in newspapers, this research proposes to view them as dynamic artworks that engage with various phenomena of contemporary art. By doing so, it seeks to go beyond the limitations of existing theoretical studies on novel illustrations and suggest a genuinely trans-genre approach.

Specifically, this study examines the aesthetic principles and genre transitions of serialized novel illustrations from the 1970s, with a focus on “The Stars’ Home” (a novel by Choi In-ho, illustrations by Kim Young-deok, and a film by Lee Jang-ho). Considering that the 1970s saw significant commercial success in serialized novels along with active exchanges between literature, art, and cinema, this research believes that "The Stars’ Home," a representative and controversial work of the time, offers an opportunity to explore the intercommunicative aesthetics that freely traverse genres and media.

Furthermore, to properly discuss the popular success of novels and the process of cinematic adaptation of literary works during this period, this study emphasizes the importance of re-examining the often-overlooked relationship between novel illustrations and cinema. It highlights how the visual images provided by illustrations can enhance the understanding and emotional impact of novel narratives and serve as a source of creative transformation in the minds of readers. This suggests that novel illustrations, as visual and formative art, may have inspired new developments in contemporary cinema.
