This article first acknowledges how our society is sensitively reacting to and being influenced by the significant changes brought about by ChatGPT, much like religious communities are also amidst its influence. To facilitate advanced research, Mieke Bal’s narrative theory and structuralist criticism are central in analyzing the motifs, language, and actions portrayed in the compared biblical passages of Saul and the Medium of Endor. Through discourse analysis, the article examines the irony and conflicts inherent in Saul’s inner state and responses. Additionally, it proposes proactive measures that religious community leaders have to prepare for and implement to achieve a harmonious integration of Christianity and artificial intelligence.
A study has shown that religious community leaders benefit from ChatGPT by gaining insights for sermon preparation or new perspectives on interpreting the Bible. This underscores the importance of understanding social discourse and presupposing Christian ethical education to encourage the recommended interaction between responsible users and ChatGPT in an educational environment. However, this study also highlights that if users approach ChatGPT with only human desires, akin to what Saul did, and repeatedly engage in such behavior, it will pose significant challenges for the future of religious communities influenced by ChatGPT.
Through this research, the following proposals are suggested for a proper religious community : First, in religious communities, there should be an ‘Ethical Education for ChatGPT users.’ It should be recognized that human desires, however small they may begin, tend to undermine and disregard religious and ethical morals. Second, the current societal and cultural structure has ushered in a new phase where ethical control mechanisms, which previously effectively exposed or drew attention to behaviors not aligned with religious values, are no longer as influential. Adequate support for the implementation of a just society through the expansion and strengthening of public theology is necessary to counteract this. Third, religious communities must provide diverse educational environments to ensure that spiritual abilities are not weakened, and they must facilitate the harmonious integration of faith and artificial intelligence.*표시는 필수 입력사항입니다.
