    규장각의 과거와 현재를 폭넓게 돌아보고 규장각에 소장된 책들의 역사적이고 문화적인 의미를 되짚어보고자 “규장각의 역사와 문화” 시리즈의 발행 계획이 2008년 9월 수립되었고, 더불어 규장각의 역사와 소장품을 이해하고자 하는 외국인들을 위한 안내서 역할을 할 영문판도 발행하기로 했다. 이 영문판은 그 결실로서, 대우재단의 지원을 받아 아카넷에서 출판되었다.

    It has been suggested that in order to clarify the duty and functions of Gyujanggak once again, we should take a comprehensive look upon the past and present of Gyujanggak and reevaluate the historical and cultural meaning of all the books currently in custody. So a plan for a series of publications entitled "The History and Culture of Gyujanggak" was established in September 2008, and a decision was made to publish English versions of the individual installments as well, as introduction pieces for foreign readers which would allow them to understand the history and collection of Gyujanggak. As part of such efforts, “Gyujanggak: Rediscovering its History and Culture” and “Gyujanggak and the Cultural History of Books” were published in August 2009, and now we present you with the English versions of those publications.

    『규장각과 책의 문화사』

    조선이 당시 문명의 중심이었던 중국에 내세워 부끄럽지 않다고 자부하도록 해 준 것이 바로 문헌이었다. 이러한 기록은 실록에서 그리 어렵지 않게 찾을 수 있다. 조선의 궁핍상을 비웃으면서도 초가일망정 집집마다 책이 있다고 놀라워한 선교사의 글도 제법 알려져 있다. 출판의 역사에서 세계에 내놓을 자랑거리 역시 금속활자로 찍은 책이다. 조선의 문화에서 내세울 만한 일등 상품은 바로 문헌이었던 것이다.
    조선의 중흥 군주 정조는 규장각을 설립하여 역대 조선 임금의 시문을 체계적으로 보관하기 위한 도서관으로 삼았고 뛰어난 학자를 영입하여 국가의 중요한 정책과 학술을 연찬하는 학술 연구 기관으로 삼았다. 조선 문물의 우수성을 세계에 과시할 방대한 문헌을 관리하는 도서관인 규장각이 한국문화의 진수를 연구하는 한국문화연구소와 통합하여 2006년 출범한 규장각한국학연구원은 이로서 정조가 꿈꾼 도서관을 겸한 연구소가 된 것이다.
    규장각에서는 2000년 국보와 보물 등 문화재적 가치가 높은 문헌을 엄선하여 『명품도록』을 제작한 바 있다. 새로 출범한 규장각한국학연구원은 문헌을 소장하고 동시에 연구하는 기관으로서 새로운 도록을 필요로 한다는 요청에 따라 이렇게 『규장각과 책이 문화사』를 세상에 내어놓게 되었다.
    이 책은 규장각한국학연구원에 소장되어 있는 문헌자료를 글과 그림으로 보이면서 책의 문화사를 세 가지 방향으로 정리해보았다.
    첫째, 목판본, 활자본, 필사본 등으로 나누어 문헌이 생산되는 방식을 보이고 이어 생산된 문헌이 반사 등을 통하여 유통되는 상황을 알게 하였다.
    둘째, 조선에서 방대한 문헌이 생산된 동기가 지식의 정리와 소통에 있다고 보아, 국자의 예악형정(禮樂刑政)을 정비하는 목적에서 편찬된 국가기록물, 조선 후기 학술의 발달로 인하여 새롭게 등장한 지식 집적물, 여행 등을 통한 견문의 확대와 그로 인한 더욱 넓은 세상에 대한 관심이 반영된 일련의 전적, 한글 사용의 확대와 지식의 보급에 따른 한글 문헌 등을 두루 다루었다.
    셋째, 정조 때 규장각이 창설되고 그곳에서 편찬하고 구입한 서적의 성격을 보임으로써, 규장각한국학연구원이 소장하고 있는 문헌의 문화사를 알 수 있게 하였다.

    Vol. 1 Kyujanggak and the Cultural History of Books
    For most people, the name Kyujanggak is immediately associated with the intrigues and splendor of the Joseon court, with venerable books and documents and the masterpieceof historical record keeping that is the “Veritable records of the Joseon dynasty”. Unfortunately, however, beyond a small circle of specialists, most people are unaware of the sheer variety of documents and books that can be found here and the checkered history of this royal library. Kyujanggak reflects the late pre-modern and modern history of Korea, as it evolved from repository of royal writings to the centerpiece of Confucian statecraft, from imperial library of the Daehan empire to state of the art archive and research center. This series aims to introduce the collection to a wider audience, offering accessible yet accurate information on the collection and how it was formed. For the first time, it offers an English-speaking audience in-depth access to the treasures that can be found here and their cultural significance.
    Kyujanggak: Rediscovering its History and Culture is a historical overview of the development of Kyujanggak during the Joseon period(1392-1910). Originally intended only as a place to store writings by kings("Kyujang" is a term for royal compositions), in 1776 King Jeongjo reinvented it as a research institute to foster the mosttalented and dedicated scholar officials. Hence its collections expanded vastly, and at this time Kyujanggak also started to publish books. In the last years of the dynasty, it became the imperial library of the Daehan empire, and at this time many works on Western science and history were acquired. During the period of Japanese encroachment and colonization, more books were added from regional archives, and after liberation, the collection continued to expand through personal donations.
    The richness and variety of the collection is amply illustrated in Kyujanggak and the Cultural History of Books, which introduces more than 200 examples of books, documents, maps, and paintings. This work not only explains the works’ contents and significance, but also how they were produced and circulated. Besides the famous "veritable records"(sillok) and ritual manuals(uigwe), there are also Buddhist works, medical manuals, maps of the whole country or of local counties, literary works, land ledgers, diplomatic correspondence, etc. In short, through this book it becomes clear that the Kyujanggak collection is a vital window into Korea’s pre-modern and early modern history.
    Both works were authored by eminent researchers of Kyujanggak and other institutions, who share their intimate knowledge of the collections and their history with the reader.
