Grounded in multi-disciplinary and multi-pronged research, this book presents a methodical and a nuanced understanding of those displaced within their national borders, the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
The IDP phenomena remains less understood than refugees, due to the ‘internal’ nature of the crisis, linked to a nation’s sovereignty, which assigns the responsibility for care, to the national actors as opposed to an international body. However, the IDP phenomena poses an international humanitarian challenge with upwards of 40 million people, currently in internal displacement across the globe. This book presents a systematic and holistic understanding of IDP issues, showcasing the innovative diagnostic model used to decode the family challenges. A triangulated investigation unfolds the multiplier effect of the positions and perspectives of key actors, woven around the narratives embraced by each. These narratives come to weigh on the continued predicament of the families reflected as multi-layer struggles of an individual, relational, economic and political dimension. The book presents a nuanced picture of the moral dilemma of return for not only those displaced but the policymakers as well. Research makes it clear that the IDP policy formulation comes to be a function of how the officials come to address and position the crisis of displacement and the consequent labelling of those displaced which come to be transferred to members of the host communities consequently governing the everyday life of those displaced.
Primarily, the book takes up the displacement of a quarter of a million Kashmiri Pandits (KPs) of Kashmir Valley, which had ruptured the very fabric of this community in 1989. It showcases research that now unfolds the political, socio-economic, and psychological dimensions of this community, yielding a holistic and a much-needed understanding of the spillover effect of this and similar communities around the globe ? living in protracted displacements, with minimal hope of return and non-acceptance by host communities. These clues provide a unique lens into the political and community entrapment of those displaced and the politics as well as the intricacies of IDP/Host dynamics that come to govern the power relations between the two communities.
This book will be of much interest to students of peace and conflict studies, humanitarianism, Asian politics and International Law in general.
