This paper deals with the fictive case study out of 『Maundy Thursday』 written by the novelist Kong Ji-Young. The novel has stirred one of the hot issues of popular culture during 2006. This paper has approached to the heroine’s shadow recognition from the viewpoint of C. G. Jung's Analytic Psychology. The encounter between the novel as praxis and Jung as a theory shows a good model for a dialogue which set a new relation between a case study and a theory which analyze and apply the case.
The reasons this case analysis has applied the Jung's Analytic Psychology as a theoretical tool are following :
Firstly, we can look into Yoo Jung's pain in this novel thorough Jung's teleological viewpoint. Secondly, we can realize that Yoo Jung's willful determination to choose life over death goes together with Jung's individuation which builds the Self by overcoming life’s pain.
The writer of this paper explores the aspects of Yoo Jung's ego, persona, complex and shadow by adopting Jung's psychology to her life. We can notice what her shadow is and how it emerges through her relations with other people. While Yoo Jung brings out shadow projection within her relations with her mother, she discovers the image of shadow within the relation with her aunt. By comparing these two relations, we can identify the desire for love and acceptance which are contained in her shadow. After we look into how the interactions among Yoo Jung's persona, complex and her shadow emerge within her relations, we will consider the necessity and the difficulty of shadow recognition.
Through this research, we can confirm the Jung's alleged theory that a shadow can have influence over a complex. Also we can realize that the recognition and acceptance of one’s persona, complex and shadow are the important starting point of the journey toward the integration of personal life.
