This survey was carried out to obtain the information of the actual conditions and problems in ginger(Zingiber officinale Rosc.) cultivation. A personal interview on 134 farmers were conducted in Seosan and Taean provinces as the chief producing place of ginger from July, 2007 to Srptember ,2007. The results were summarized as follows ;
In the career of ginger cultivation 77.7% of the respondents cultivated over eleven years, and in the cultivated area of ginger 51.0% of the respondents cultivated below 3,300㎡. 91.9% of the respondents cultivated large ginger, and 88.7% of the respondents sterilized seed ginger before seeding, and 9.8% of the respondents sprouted bud before seeding. 29.0% of the respondents sterilized the field soil before making ridge and furrow. Planting distances of ginger were almost 30×20㎝, 25×25㎝ and 30×30㎝, and the percentage and fertilizers used to respondents were compost 93.8%, horticultural complex fertilizer 82.8%, lime 59.4% and boron 37.5%. For the weed control of ginger field, respondents conducted herbicide spray before mulching, herbicide spray after mulching and weed control by hands, and the percentage of those were 90.5%, 72.9% and 93.4% respectively. 90.6% of respondents mulched the ginger field by rice straw and 88.9% of those used sprinkler in irrigation methods. The percentages of artificial shading, rain shelter and laying core pipe were 4.8%, 6.7% and 19.7% respectively. 41.9% of respondents sprayed agricultural chemicals to three times for the control of ginger rhizome rot. The most severe disease and insect in ginger cultivation were ginger rhizome rot and beet armyworm. In the years of continuous cropping, one year showed highest frequency to 43.3%, and in that of crop rotation 3~4 year showed highest frequency. In ginger storage methods, 78.3% of respondents used a cave, and 55.7% of respondents replied that the area of ginger cultivation will be maintain the present area.
