One of important issues in poetry education is explaining what roles the poetic speaker plays within the poetic text and in what image the speaker is exposed. Yang Wang yong said that it would be a shortcut to a desirable class to understand the characteristics of the poetic speaker first in poetry education. As much, it is considered critical to examine the character and function of the poetic speaker in understanding a poem. In other words, when we know what kind of person the poetic speaker is and what situation he is in, we can understand a poem more easily and develop an attitude of integrating the value of literature with our life.
This study purposed to suggest a teaching learning plan focused on the poetic speaker in order to help students understand various forms of poetic speaker observed in poems and appreciate poems based on the understanding. Chapter II made a theoretical approach to the character and function of poetic speakers. Chapter III classified poetic speakers in the aspect of relation between the speaker and the world' into tragic speakers, optimistic speakers, critical speakers, romantic speakers, and neutral speakers. Then, works corresponding to each type of speaker were examined. Chapter IV discussed problems in current education, solutions for such problems in class, and the significance of the solutions. In particular, Ku In hwan's class model is considered exemplary in teaching on poetic speakers in that it has an open structure that allows the utilization of learners' experiences. Thus, this study designed an actual teaching learning plan to teach tragic, critical and neutral speakers based on Ku In hwan's class model.
