In Korea, the damage caused by typhoons and unpredicted local heavy rain is slowly increasing recently. In order to avoid this damage, there has to be precise and fast forecast of the amount of rain and its direction is needed.
Currently, the method of estimating precipitation can be divided into two ways; lumped model and unit hydrograph. However, these two methods are not sufficient for people to predict the movement of rainfall direction.
The distributed model is an appropriate suggestion for this issue because distributed model is using small grid cells and each grid cells has valuable hydrological information. Therefore, with these numerous grid cells, it is possible to analyze the characteristic of rainfall at a time and in a particular place.
In this research, applicability of hydrologic distributed model in Nam-River Dam basin was investigated by calculating the flood discharge considering the direction of rainfall movement. Frequency rainfall, which is designed to have a hundred years of incidence and duration of twenty four hours, was used. In addition, the direction of rainfall movement was examined in eight different directions(E, W, N, S, NE, NW, SE, SW).
This study is significant because it shows the difference between calculating flood discharge with consideration of the direction of rainfall movement and without it.
