Because of high popularity of the Olympic Games, it attracts significant commercial, media and consumer attention. Since countries around the world are beginning to understand the potential economic effect of the Olympics, the number of candidate cities to host them has gradually increased. Like PyeongChang, which is preparing its third Winter Olympics bid for 2018, there are many cities that seek to host the Olympic Games in spite of successive failures. This thesis examines the major factors influencing the Olympic bid by the analysis of two recent Olympic bids such as 2014 winter Olympic Game and 2016 Summer Olympic Bid. The comparison focuses on five main factors: the IOC Evaluation Commission Report, Ranking in Olympic, Lobby activity, IOC membership and the rotation system. The findings of the thesis are that first, IOC Evaluation Commission Report and Ranking in Olympic do not have a important role in affecting voting results. However, lobbying activity, IOC membership and the rotation system has been considered carefully to win the Olympic Bid. Therefore, in order to make a successful next Olympic bid for PyeongChang, this thesis suggests that drawing up a detailed lobbying plan. Secondly, pay more attention to each IOC member’s personal background. Lastly, keep up with the trends of rotating system.
