Although the self-esteem in the Christian teenagers has been recognised as a crucially important factor to develop their personality in their lives, it has often been passed over, without rarely paying attention to it. Therefore, the subject matter of this study is to investigate phenomenologically the development and nature of the self-esteem of Christian teenagers, and to suggest a new insight to the Christian counselling.
The participants in this research are consisted in five Christian teenagers in my Church and we had four sessions with them, and the researcher had depth interview with them by using the unsystematic question sheets.
The following results are not just phenomenological description about the response of the participants, but rather phenomenological description on the nature of development of the self-esteem of the Christian teenagers based on the response of the participants by using Colaizzi's phenomenological method, that is, putting of the main subject in parentheses and categorization of them. The results of this study are as follows:
1. The self-esteem of the participants are closely related to the intimate fellowship with their parents. The positive and negative impacts on the self-esteem are depended upon parents' encouragement, concerns and productive dialogue.
2. Friendly relationship should be not exclusive, but mutual relationship.
3. Problem solving methods of the participants are dialogical rather than monological.
4. Social concern and parental support to the participants give positive strengths to increase and restore self-esteem of the Christian teenagers.
5. The physical conditions of the participants have some impact on the development of the self-esteem; yet the recognition and restoration of the self-esteem in the participants made them more active in their lives.
6. Academic achievement of Christian teenagers is basic to the students, and yet it depends upon their efforts to make it well.
7. Christian teenagers are created by the image of God, and so they are related to God as children of God, their creator and redeemer.
8. The self-esteem of the participants are depended upon, overall, by various conditions of them, such as social and family conditions. Yet they have a sense of well being of their existence.
Discovering and restoration of the self-esteem of the Christian teenagers, all these insight will contribute to the Christian teenagers counselling.
