The purpose of this thesis is to study on the thought of C. G. Jung. This thesis is intended as a research on the idea of the collective unconsciousness in relation the Image of God as a man. Jung's collective unconsciousness may be a very useful means of self-reflection and self-realization of the moderns, who have been living actually in self-loss without true self-realization. On this awareness, this study is made for diagnosis of the actual situation and for prescription of the mental status in the Korean Christians and churches. It is not difficult to know the fact that the concept of collective unconsciousness of C. G. Jung is very useful for the pastoral theology. If we are to understand this theory honesty and to apply it properly to the pastoral field, It is especially important that we should meet God.
Jung lays emphasis on the reality of the collective unconsciousness in the personal soul. His theory is radically distinct from the individual unconsciousness of Freud's psychology. He also gives his theory as a key to the question of human being's soul.
On his viewpoint, the individual unconscious is related only to the totality of individual life experience and personal life. But the collective unconscious in contrast is universal. It can't be built up like personal unconsciousness. It is the repository of all spiritual, religious symbols and all supernatural experiences. It is main factors which endows the spirituality to man. Jung taught that the psyche consists of various systems including the personal unconscious with its complexes and the collective unconscious with its archetypes. His theory of a personal unconscious is similar to Freud's psychology. However his central point is the collective unconscious, with what Jung identified as "archetypes". Regardless the difference of geographical culture and the race diversity, the collective unconscious is universal and general. It is influential to the behavior type of man. The collective unconscious, his most notable idea, has the self that is related with the reality of God. This term "the self" refers to the spiritual forms which are the preexistent types of all things of the material world. Human beings are living with help of the collective unconscious, which Jung called the nominose. All realities of the human beings depend on the idea that is related with the archetypes. Jung identifies the archetype with the self which is referred to the personality of God. The self is the original symbol which exists in the human being's unconscious for the realization of himself and personal meeting with God's personality.
The majority of Korean Christians have probably never heard of C. G. Jung, but his influence in the church is vast. His psychological analysis guides us to deep insight for divine personality. Although his psychology is not religious directly, but it seems to relate with Christian doctrine. What is important in his collective unconscious is to explain theoretically some Christian dogmatical problems: Imago Dei and the origin of Sin in the doctrine of Man, Specifically, Jung's Investigation to the collective unconscious ist very useful for the pastoral theology in relation to the personal meeting with God. When Christian dogmatical doctrine has no theoretical explanation, it could be fallen into supernatural arbitrary, which cannot be accepted by modern man. So, it is necessary to understand and to need more deep to investigate his analysis psychology. We have to examine the problem of collective unconscious more closely, in order to explain the Christian dogmatical doctrine theoretically.
Korean Christian churches are filled up with religious syncretism. In particular, the impact of shamanism in our evangelical churches is so great. In this situation, Jung's analysis psychology may be helpful to consider significance our Christian doctrine.
