To investigate the vegetation structure and flora of Picea jezoensis forests at the by Chunwangbong area in the Jirisan national park, 33 plots(400㎡) were set up by a random sampling method. The proportion of dead trees in Picea jezoensis forests were 20.2%. They were observed mainly in upper-layer trees. A few seedlings of Picea jezoensis were found in this investigation area. It indicates that Picea jezoensis might be declined gradually in future. Picea jezoensis forests were classified in major two groups by cluster analysis. There were strong positive correlations between Syringa reticulata and Acer pseudosieboldianum, Tripterygium regelii, Quercus serrata; Betula ermani and Lonicera maackii: Euonymus macropterus and Acer ukurunduense; Acer pseudosieboldianum and Tripterygium regelii, and relatively weak negative correlations were showed between Picea jezoensis and Abies koreana; Betula ermani and Acer ukurunduense; Acer pseudosieboldianum and Tripterygium regelii. Species diversity index(H') of investigated groups ranged from 1.0000 to 1.3010. To conserve Picea jezoensis forests at Banyabong area in Chirisan, research and prescription against the decline of Picea jezoensis should be established. In addition, Sasa purpurascens, Quercus mongolica, Tripterygium regelii, Weigela subsessilis, Fraxinus sieboliana, Acer pseudo-sieboldianum, Rhododendron mucronulatum var. mucronulatum and Calamagrostis arundinacea in the Picea jezoensis forests should be controlled.
There were 667 kinds, 24 forma, 115 varieties, 528 species, 339 genera and 100 families of total plants in the investigated area. The endemic woody plants of Korea were 15 species. The species of rare and endangered plants was 5 species such as Tricyrtis dilatata, Abies koreana, Rhododendron brachycarpum, R. tschonoskii. and Oplopanax elatus.
