This study is to suggest the positive possibility for the youth who are hopeless of the future due to low self-esteem; to offer the opportunity for recognizing the meaning of courage through the process of increasing the self-esteem.
In order to do so, firstly, I have established the concepts for the meaning of courage and anxiety regarding the adolescence. First of all, based on Freud's theory conceptualizing the understanding of anxiety, I have understood the anxiety and courage mentioned in the theory of individual psychology by Alder and existentialism. After then, based on these concepts through literature study and through the interview with 78 youth people, I have organized the concepts of courage that they consider to be. Also, with the approach to the concept of courage combined with common concepts from 78 youth people, I have defined the meaning of courage: "Courage is the power that transfers the unconscious self-awareness into the potentials for hope in spite of anxiety of hopelessness." Therefore, in the process of overcoming the domain of anxiety, courage is considered as the creative power and positive energy.
Secondly, the desire to positively recover the low self-esteem based on these courage during adolescence has been observed as greatly high. For this reason, the study has found that the youth with low self-esteem shall have the potentials to try to experience the meaning of personal courage in supportive and secure environment. The youth with low self-esteem have negative self-image; therefore, they intend to start their experience of courage from the environment which is capable of changing the negative perspective to the positive one. When they feel accommodated, they start to experience the process of discovering about themselves while discharging self-criticism with negative perspective. When this happens, the youth intend to discover themselves while only depending on the outer environment, and they do not recover the self-esteem. However, they build up the courage for creative situation and reproductive experience through forming the courage inside themselves, trusting the outer environment, and trusting personal, psychological state. I have considered the process of forming courage compared to the perspective of Donald W. Winnicott's Object relations theory.
Thirdly, the experience of courage promotes the progress to the next stage. Also, it increases the satisfaction of life and illuminates the social and family's recovery not only the personal recovery. The most important thing is that adolescence is the main period for designing the future in order to become a healthy adult who manages the self controls through understanding the self-concept, forming identity and positive self-esteem. So, it is critical to establish the correct self-awareness, to control the anxiety and stress, and to form the self-esteem through recognition and accommodation.
The study has considered throughout the other literatures about self-esteem, establish the concept of courage, and applied these to Donald W. Winnicott's object relations theory in order to bring out the above result. The meaning of courage to increase the self-esteem has been brought out as a result of applying the youth with low self-esteem to the perspective of Winnicott's Object relations theory, maturational process and the facilitating environment. Through the main character of the movie, 『The Blind side Michael's process of positively recovering the self-esteem supported the thesis of this study.
Nevertheless, it shall be challenging to generalize since the study has centered around the personal clinical experience and analysis of the movie. In addition, due to lack of documentation for precedent study, literature study has difficulties to prove the effectiveness. Also, since this study has focused on supportive environment I hope there will be further successive study individual psychological experience in the future.
Lastly, as the importance of family and relationship with others is getting more crucial, it is necessary to consider the experience of courage in the organizational structure. Therefore, this study about the meaning and experience of courage maintains the possibility to offer the new perspective during the family counselling. It is difficult to prove its effectiveness; however, the study suggests the possibility of adaption to the family counselling through constant discussion and the importance of new challenge for study family counselling.
