The world is recognizing the importance of ethnicity and traditions and also in South Korea, the study of traditional hair style has been proceeded to be further developed.
The writer has studied women's hair of the Chosun Dynasty through the records, genre paintings and pre studies and reenacted the 'Fusion-Up Style' based on the theoretical background and reappearance.
By the influence of Practical Thought, there were many social and cultural changes and thus, the development of the commercial and manufacturing industry, increase in production of agricultural industry and dissemination of Seodang (small class for study). By these reasons, there was the development of social level-up for populace, Pansori (Korean Traditional Opera), Korean literature and Sijo (Korean Ode) during the late Chosun Dynasty.
The women's social positions were differentiated upon their husband's position and poor. Often, the style of hair reflected their social positions during the late Chosun Dynasty, the Queen, the Crown-princess and similar positioned women had Daisoo, Keunmeori and Eoyeomeori for traditional ceremony and Chopzi hair or Zzok hair for normal occasions.
Whereas the common women liked Unzien, Zzok hair using their own hairs, the non-married girls liked Kwimit hair or Nangjagaeanggey hair. Kisaeng (female entertainer) used wigs on their hair to make it look richer, and Nangjassangye shaped with two parts has appeared for a while as a modification of Zzok hair. Unzien hair and Tre hair appeared in the genre paintings as the women's common hair style which were drawn by Kim Hong-do(1745~1816) and Shin Yun-bok(1758~?), who have expressed the normal life styles of the common people. The hair style showed the distinction of their social status and wealth.
The word "Fusion" defines that more than two cultures are combined and makes it completely different from previous one which can be told as a composition or a mixture. One of the representative examples would be the "Fusion Jazz", the terminology created by a mixture of Jazz and Rock music. Moreover, in the area of fashion, food, interior and etc, it affected the various cultures.
Especially, in beauty culture, the hair design is not only a usage of protecting head, but also it tells human's esthetical desires and measures of the ornamental decoration. It has been developed with reflection of the flow of social trends.
Up-Style defines "all kinds of hair styles displayed on neck by combing upwards and using pins for fixing", it is one sphere of hair design purposed for expression and creation of the three dimensional and aesthetic beauty. Escaping the heavy image Up-Style by an "Pony-tail" effect throwing away the splendid decorations popular in the past and also it expresses the minimal and practical style for hair.
There is a variety of form, texture and colour in Up-Style hair design and it has been developed among the hair-artists by their own personal styles and designs. Based on women's common hair styles of the late Chosun Dynasty such as Zzok hair, Kwimit hair, Unzien hair, Chozim hair and Deulre hair, the writer expressed and developed the three different styles at an art-work and the richness with curl is given to Zzok hair and Kwimit hair mixing the modern image, whereas the big size of Unzien hair and Chozim hair emphasizing the practicality is simply designed. Moreover, the color sense of dyeing not used in the past is applied for the three dimensional effect, and the rich curl is given by iron, and volume sense is given by back comb, whereas the Fusion style is applied and proposed using the cutting method such thinning treatment for back comb. Finally, it is well know that the Up-Style is used in many cases such as wedding hair, fashion show, hair show and casual and it is used not only for the special events, but also for the common hair style. The writer hopes that the excellence of the Korean traditional hair style is more introduced and this study contributes to the positioning of beauty as a science.
