ILO (International Labour Organization; ILO) adopted Maritime Labour Convention 6 on 23rd February 2006 because ILO39 convention sand 26 recommendations is lack of consistency, redundancy, and the latest not outright over the past 80 years which improve working conditions of maritime workers and good working conditions for Seafarers.
Maritime Labour Convention 2006 coordinated ILO conventions and recommendations and urged country to ratify it. And of which good working environment for seafarers is a main issue resulting in Port state control to include inspection items for working condition of seafarers and working environment. Therefore, shipping companies, ship's owners, and government must prepare for the enforcement of MLC 2006.
This paper takes a look at the background and main contents of the 2006 Maritime Labour Convention, studies the convention's future impact on the shipping company, and derives crew policy direction and practical preparation for a shipping company.
