The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of fire fighter's PTSD symptoms, traumatic experience, coping style and their perception of social support.
State-Trait, Post-traumatic stress Scale(PDS), Impact of Event Scale-Revised(IES-R), Ways of Coping Checklist(WCC), Stress Response Inventory(SRI) and Social support scale were administered to 300 fire fighters working in Busan.
The results are listed as below :
First, high risk group of getting PTSD symptoms were 44.6% among fire fighters.
Second, traumatic experiences have an effect on PTSD symptoms.
Third, high risk group of getting PTSD symptoms use more passive coping style than low risk group.
Fourth, high risk group of getting PTSD symptoms perceived significantly lower social support than other group.
This study showed that fire fighters who suffers from PTSD symptoms can be cured from symptoms by cope-training program and systematic social support. and their quality of life will also increase.
Consequently, It needs political countermeasure and caution to help fire fighters who suffer from PTSD symptoms.
