As super large container ship has emerged in the shipping market, port strategy was rapidly changed to Hub&Spoke System. Over 10,000TEU container ship berth at Hub Port, which located on the main trunk route. and feeder container ship connect the hub-port to small port on the feeder route. as port Strategy was changed, Ports in South korea, China, Japan are competing desperately for the hub-port in the Northeast Asian Region.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the feasibility of Busan Port as the Hub in the Northeast Asian Region. with variety of elements and site a precedent study on hub-port, performed SWOT analysis of the ports in South korea and China. Therefore, The thesis shows the possibility of Busan Port to be the Hub in the Northeast Asian Region.
Competitiveness of Busan Port are First, increasing cargo traffics of transit shipment with excellent feeder network connecting to ports in China and Japan.
Second, Busan has a geographic supremacy. Busan Port is located in the major trunk line to north America and Europe and its location with easy access for transshipment to industrial complex of China and Japan.
Third, Busan Port operates 365 days a year without closing a day which allows container ships to keep punctuality, meanwhile, other competitive ports in china close more than 30 days yearly.
Forth, port charges are more cheaper than competitive ports in China and Japan.
Weaknesses of Busan Port are First, decrease in container traffic of transit shipment in North China by expansion of port facilities in North China to Strengthen the Competitiveness.
Second, strong willingness of Chinese government for construction of port and improvement in the existing port facilities to deal with rapidly changing market conditions.
Third, Port Complex at new port isn't working properly, which was originally planed for attracting global logistics companies to revitalize the Busan Port.
Forth, shallow depth of water(15m), to berth Over 10,000TEU container ship(ULCS : Ultra Large Container Ship), It's necessary to keep depth of water 16m~17m.
Coping Strategy of Busan Port as the Hub in the Northeast Asian Region based on SWOT analysis are First, attract more Transit Shipment in North China to strengthen the competitiveness to be the Hub Port.
Second, As shipping market changes rapidly, Ultra Large Container Ship(ULCS) emerges in the market. To deal with new shipping strategy, 16m~17m in depth of water must be secured. and build phase 2-4, 2-5, 2-6 of berths at New Port as originally planned to secure Competitiveness.
Third, boost Port Complex at New Port by attracting more global logistics companies, providing various benefits and simplify administrative procedures. if need be, make New Port as a free port such as Hong Kong Port.
Forth, build the transport network by expanding various transport service to connect North Port and New Port for smooth transportation of transit shipment. and provide carrier with various and actual incentive for transport between North Port and New Port.
Fifth restore the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fishery to play roles as control tower for Busan Port to establish consistent and a long-term policy to secure competitiveness for the Hub in the Northeast Asian Region.
