The Asian Gypsy moth (AGM) is a highly destructive forest pest that feeds on both deciduous and coniferous trees. The ability of the female moth to travel up to 21 nautical miles and it is coupled with the voracious appetite of AGM larvae which can cause widespread defoliation leaving trees weakened and susceptible to disease.
AGM is found between the latitudes of 24° and 60° north. Areas where there is a high risk of infestation include Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Russian Far east and Northern China.
Due to the destructive nature of AGM larvae, several countries have strict procedures in place to prevent its entry and establishment. The United States America and Canada are particularly pro-active in attempting to stop the spread of AGM with detailed pre-entry and inspection requirements for vessel that have called at ports in high risk areas during the flight season.
This paper deals with the impact of strict procedures in the United States America and Canada to prevent AGM influx for ship operation & logistics.
